Eddie Ingels picked up his third Scratch main event win of. the season when he took the victory at Expo Speedway in Sacramento. California. Expert class, as almost o ne-th ird of th e field dro pped out in th e closi ng laps with engine problems : Mi ke Klopp jumped ou t to a several length margin after a few laps, with MIke Varnes, T odd Ken dig a nd Bill y Bro mley "fighting for second. Cerciello moved into fou rt h by the fifth lap , while the race was red -flagged abo ut halfway as Georgie Price fell in the groove in the firs t tu rn. O n the restart, Varnes got inside Klopp br iefly , but Klop p kicked in th e afterburners, and after a lap had regain ed his same margin back . Cerciell o moved into a close th ird on th e restart. With victory in hand, Klopp disin tegrated his engine as he came off the second turn with one lap left. Cerciell o chas ed Varnes the fin al la p and a half, coming up a length down. Results 55: 1. Jones SACRAMENTO, CA, MAY 18 Eddie Ingels sliced through traffic to pi ck up his third Scratch main win ' and J im Sisemore flew fro m his 50yar d starting position to take the checkered in the H andicap main at Cal Expo Speedway. . Ingels, on the pol e, was first out of th e gate in the Scratch main bu t Bart Bast, ,fro m 'ga te two, moved to th e inside of Ingles as th ey hit turn one a nd took th e lead. In gels and Sisemore did a touch-and-go on th e next la p with Sisemore falling off th e pace to avoid the wall. Ingels, on hi s A&A powered G M, went after Bast while Steve Crawford moved pas t the tro ubled Sisemore into third. Bast was in the groove .but saw the win slip away wh en he bac ked it in turn four. Ingels took advantage of the error to slip in side and grab the lead as the white flag came ou t. At" th e finish it was In gels wit h the win over ' .Bast, Crawford and Sisemor e. . Sise more, sta rti ng alongside of Bast on the 50-yard han dicap line, neatl y sliced to the lead as th e low er handicap riders cou ld .no t hold the inside groove, giving Sisemore an . easy tri p through the pack. Ken Wagner ran away with the Division T wo mai n fo r his first win of th e year. Steve Orlandi gave chase through the six- lap race. Mike Kain moved in to challenge O rla ndi for second, keep ing Orlandi occupied for the . last lap and away fro m Wagner. . Byrd took an ear ly lead in theGTO class of the IOOKM solo endurance race , but Gunn passed him to pull ahead in the first th ird of th e race. Byrd' s Su zuki fell back for severa l laps, but he regai ned lost ground to tag close ly behi nd G unn. Gunn held his adva ntage for most of the race, but th en rode into the pi ts, allowing Byrd to take the GTO tro ph y. Soo n after the race began, Gunn was forced to coas t off th e track d ue to shifting proble ms. H e surprised the spe ctat ors by returning to th e race with the ailing sh ifter, wh ich he co ntin ued to adj ust during th e race. Diem, McBride score at APE Speedway By Todd Kroh GREENE, NY, MAY 14 Warren Diem and Len McBride both racked up their firs t ma in event wins o f 1988 a t Action P ark Ea st Spe edway . . Scratch racing was build in g up to a Diem-George La zor confronta tion as both Diem and Lazor swept into th e Division One Scratch main undefeat ed. J ohn Lewis and Mark Edwards ro unded ou t the four-man field. Lazor jumped off th e line in turn one first riding down low at the start of the main. Diem followed him out of turn two a nd slid in close going into tu rn s th ree and four. On lap two Lazor ' began moving to th e m iddle of the track where' the smo o thest groove was. Expecting Diem to be on th e outside of him com ing off turn two on lap three La zor slid out even higher. Diem took the opportunity to square the corner off and grab a handful of throttle blasting h is Keech Video /Blenzo /Diem 's Cycl e Godden by Lazo r 's Jawa. Lazor tried closing the gap but to no avail as Diem evened th e season's score with one win a p iece. Edwards ran his be st rac e of the season finishin~ third with Lewis fourth.
