Blair b'asts Vinton Co. Fairgrounds MX By Toni Williams McARTH UR, OH, MAY 8 Mike Blair wrapped up th e overall victory in the 125cc A class at th e fin al race of the Pep si T ri -Sta te Motocross Ch all enge Series held at the Vinton Co unty Fairgrounds. In the firs t rnoto Blair, Brent Blevins and J ack Corder each took several turns a t th e lead . Blevins char ged off th e li ne to tak e the holesh o t bu t on lap four he went down and Blair a nd Corder go t by. Blevin s charged right back, retaking Corder and pushing Blair wh en he went down again. At th e finish itwas Corder first, Blair in second and Jim Do ward th ird. In moto two Blevins took the lead again, but this tim e he was not to be denied. Blevins stayed just ahead of the seesaw battle between Corder and Blair and held them off to tak e the checkered flag. The Micro-Mini class proved to be exciting with Jeremy Berwanger and Mark Burkhar t givi ng the crowd a show. In rnoto one Berwanger and Bur khar t traded the lead back and . fourth five times and ran continually side-by-side. In the heat of the race Berwanger's airbox was knocked off but he still managed to take the win over Burkhart. Moto two proved to be just as exciting with Berwanger o nce again pulling out the win with Burkhart right besid e him a nd Melissa Wil liams a close third. . Results MI CRO M INI: 1. Williamson takes Wapella MX by storm By Dana Crutcher WAPELLA, IL, MAY 8 Tod Williamson took the overall victo ry in the Open class with a 12 tall y at th e Bloomington-Normal Motorcycle Club's di strict qualifier at Wapella. Bill Clark too k th e holeshot in th e first mot o but was quickly passed by J on Kulton. A rider crashed which required the ambulance to ente r th e track and th e race was red-flagged. Therestart saw William son rocket into th e lead aboard h is Yamaha an d mov e out ahead 'o f th e pack, givin g him a clear track a nd the moto win . Wh ile Pa ul Bratko led the first four lap s of mo to two Williamson, wh o go t off to a midpack start, fou ght too th and nail to I1!lPve up th ro ugh the field. By the en d' of the mo to Williamson had wor ked up to a second-place finish which gave him the overall win. In the first 125cc B moto T ony Parkh ill took the holeshot and led th e pack for th e en tire rnoto for an easy win. In round two Parkhill a nd Gray Gabbert viciously battl ed backand-forth for the lead wi th Gabbert event uall y winning the moto. Ga bbert only placed seven th in th e first Tim Selby (2 4 E) t akes the lead on his way t o w inning the 500cc Open Junior class at t he Lodi Cycle. Cameron C _ Giammanco gets win at King City ST By Jack Barton KING CITY, CA, MAY 14 Anthony G iammanco finis hed first in the 600cc Expert clas s after being pushed hard by Keith Day and Gar y Farravanti. Farra van ti was asleep on the line but soo n made up the ground while up front Day and Giam man co switc hed the lead th ree times. On la p eigh t G iammanco rnade a tig h t pass o n th e in side of turn two and held . the lead to the finish. In the 500cc Junior class T ra pper McDaniel won ' over Patrick Vacchieri and Lonnie La cy. McDaniel was in the lead from flag to flag a nd the rea l race was for second. Vacchie ri and La cy passed each other o n every lap with Vacchieri co ming ou t on top. Lonnie Pauley and George McBee worked each other over in th e 250cc Nov ice class . McDowell the master at LodiST By Mikki McBride 1,..OD!, CA, MAY 15 H onda rider Bobb y McDowell stole th e show at th e Lodi Cycle Bowl by winning the P ro-Am class and taking second in th e 500cc Open Expert class. In th e P ro-Am heat, Steve Raymond put his Rotax into the holesho t position but McDowell was on his tail and by h im on the ou tside before th e riders reac hed turn two. R a ym ond was soon p assed b y another Ro tax rider, Steve Mayfield. In th e m ain eve nt McDowell grabbed th e hol eshot with Rotax rider Michael Gresham close on his heels. Mayfield fell into the th ir d spo t with Kevin Bricker, on another Ro tax, in fourth and Ra ymond in fifth. Ra ymond got by Bricker in turn four on the fifth lap wh ile McDowell continued to lead wi th . Gresham sti ll trying hard to catch him: J ust pas t the halfway point another Ro tax rider, Mark Corse tti ; was down and sliding in turn two along with Gresham following sui t on th e next lap before Corsetti had even climbed back o n his own bike. McDowdl held on to the first spot all the way wit h Raym ond co mmg in a distan t seco nd followed by H arl ey rider Randy Fisher in thi rd, Mayfi eld fourth and Bricker in fifth. In th e 500cc O pen Expert class McDow ell again won th e heat and almost had the main when lie turned on th e gas jus t a tad too m uch coming out of turn four before the checkered flag. That mov e allowed G resham to take advan tage of th e situation a nd get by McDowell on the inside to nab the first spot. McDowell pulled in second followed by Fisher, Mayfield and Ra ymond.
