Ingram tops DeMoisey HM By Bert & Denna Shepard 30 WELLSTOM,OH,MAY 8 Dan In gram, Dave Coo k and Mike Buller ea rned victor ies in th ei r respective classes at the 5th Annual J ohn DeMoi sey Memorial Half Mile. Martin La'Voie, Bryan Hardin, George Roeder , Doug Davis and Ingra m all cracked the 27-second barrier in Expert qualifying at the Apple Valley sponsored event; bu t Davis' 1985 record was safe. Ingram's 26.785 on th e Scott Hewitt H-D 600 was the fastest time. Junior Cook turned the Jackson County Fairgrounds in 28 seconds flat . Qualifying heats were won by ProAm riders Gordy Schopiera y and Pat Beh rle, and J uniors Dave Coo k and T odd Cona nt. Roeder go t the best of fa st qualifier In gram in the first Expe rt heat, whi le sta ble-ma tes Scott Stump and Will ie McCo y ar gu ed over th ird place. La Voie and Dan Knecht filled out the top five. . The second h eat was a good example of how to ride the rough faci lit y. Davis and Hardin worked the middle and rim of th e fairgrounds, whi le Darrin Erichsen rode the ra il. Erichsen 's dri ve and patience paid off as the track became more difficult to negotiate. At the checkers it was Erichsen, Hardin, Davis, Brad Haas and Steve Labordus. . Schopieray chose the inside pol e for the start of the Pro-Am main. Behrl e had company as he led the dash to the first tum. J.J. McDowell , Schopieray and Mike Buller all wanted to displace Behrle. The first year professionals used a variety of lines to attack the raceway. By the halfway point the lead ers moved in on the tail of the field, " I was squaring off the comers when I got bumped up hi gh and brought it hom e," exp lained winner Butl er. Scho p iera y kept Behrle and McDowell at bay for second. . J on Enyart got th e jump on the Junior field and led after one tour. Todd Conant and Cook ba ttled their way past Enyart and the remainder of the Junior field. Conant and Cook tried to occupy the sam e space in turn two. Cook came ou t on top and moved the Charl es Chari ot 's Honda to the winner's circle. Don Mar tin , on a borrowed mount, finished th ird in front of Tom Ikey, Ron Sch roeder, Tim Best, Phil J ones, David Miller, Kelly Bowlb y and Enyart. Geor ge Roeder had the pole for the Expert main, but In gram had h is own ideas; he put in a perfect 10 laps to take the win. Hardin returned to the rim and Erichsen rode the rail as the duo bat tled for second, while Davis and Ro ed er a rg ue d o ver fou rth. Erich sen 's bid for the wi n soon disappeared with h is bra kes, and wh ile Davis and Roeder argued they displaced Harden to fourth. In gram led the way home and Roeder go t by Davis for second. . Gonzalez on the gas at Perris MX By David Procida PERRIS, CA, MAY 8 Mercedes Gonzalez dominated the Women 's Expert class with back-toback wins as the S.P .E.E.D. Racing Association hosted a speci al Ladies and Mother's Day race at Perris Raceway. Gonzalez proceeded to lead the ent ire Women's class into turn one at the start of the first moto. Running a cl ose second and third were WMXA's Tami Rice and Bonnie Warch. The two Suzuki Coun try Racing-sponsored riders diced for second place while Gonzalez styled her way out front. Another hot battle going on was waged betw een SCR pilot Brenda Conner and Malcolm Smith 's Gale Webb. The two bumped bars and bikes for over threequarters of the moto before Webb dropped off the pa ce. Gonzalez took the checkered well ahea d of the pa ck and Ri ce held off a hard cha rgi ng War ch for second whi le Co nner and Webb rounded ou t the top five. . In rn oto two Gonzalez was aga in quickly in to the lead position with Rice and Warch picking up where the y left off in moto one. Their battle carr ied them away from the rest of the pack. The positions remained the same for the rem ainder of the race with the overall going to Gonzalez. The Wom en 's Intermediate class had a tight race going for the motoon e lead with White Bros/FMF rid er Lori H edstrom holding off the charges of Maria Gonzalez. Every time Hedstrom opened up a little . braking room Gonzalez wou ld close it up. Late in the moto, Hedstrom finally di d open up a little braking room, but never did back off the pa ce and took the win with Gonzalez taking second. In the second outing Maria Gonzalez again tra iled behind Hedsrom while stayi ng ahead of J eanette Howell , who was leading th e Novice class. He cleaned the Heavyweight and Unlimited Supersport classes - the Middleweight Superspo rt 10-lap 16-miler had a different flavor. Sadowski im media tely leaped his Suzuk~G SXR750 to the lead in the Heavyw eight Superspo rt jaunt. M ercedes Gonzalez won the Women's Expert class at Perris. Suzuki GSXR750-mounted Experts Jeff Heino, Mark Smith and Bill Loomis were on e second beh ind. On lap two , Heino fell hard coming out of turn six, and Smith locked in on second. Sadowski pulled to a ninesecond lead and held it to the end. Expert Mark Bou gas, also on a Suzuki GSXR750, broke clear of the howling horde and finished third. It was ditto for Sadowski in the Unlimited Supersport class. At the green, he quickly shot to the point with Experts Mark Bougas, David Sartorious and Mark Velard i, all on Suzuki GSXRlloos. Within striking distance, lap two saw Bougas .have a bone jarring crash in tum six. Sanorious and Velardi got into a furious dice for second. Sadowski pulled away to a 15-second lead and cruised on home. The number two slot was up fur grabs right to the wire; Sartorious wore the 'silver, Velardi sett led for the bronze. Sadowski, now riding a Suzuki 600 Katana, and Todd Hebert, on a Honda Hurricane 600, set the pace for the Middleweight Supersport contest, Expert Matt Gordon, riding a Honda Hurrican e 600, started to reel them in , Sadowski pulled slightly ah ead and Gordon zipped by Hebert. Lap four put the gritty 21year-old northern' New Hampshire native to haunting Sadowski, with Expert Steve Noqueira on a Honda 600 Hurricane soo n to hold the title for third place. Gordon edged by Sadowski on lap five to take the lead. Except for a co u p le of h eartthumping slides and a test or two from Sadowski, Matt was in complete command and led Sadowski to the wire by a half-second. Sadowski immediately lodged a protest and ordered a tear-down. He then conceded to allow Gordon to run his other race of the day before the inspection. Gordon, unfortunately parted company with hi s CBR600 in tum three. The bike ended up under four feet of water in Bryar Pond where it la y for two- and-a-half hours, until the end of the day. The Hurricane turned out to be legal. Gordon got the win. • Results LIW S/BK EX: 1. Ernie Davoli (Yam); 2. Ron Franchino (Yamt 3. Rick Frost (Yam~ LIW S/BK JR: 1. Matthew Wasilevvskl (Hen); 2.
