Jay Gainetti led from start to f inish to win the Costa Mesa Handicap main for the second t ime in three weeks. vicious battle with a number of riders for second, was the first to get past Gra y. Farnum, jockeying the J R Concrete Pumping/Justice Brothers/ Cod y Racing Jawa, got by Gray just in time. A huge five rider knot, including Gray, Oxley, Jessee Finch, Louis Kossuth and Scotty Brown, circled the track in an incredibly tight formation. Finch was the first to go when hIS rear ure went flat on lap five. O xley and Brown finally broke from the pack on lap six but they had years of territory to make up if they were to' challenge Farnum, but they only had two laps left and Farnum wouldn't budge as he set the pace the rest of the way to score his first win of the year in convincing style. Oxley and Brown, both coming from the back of the pack, took the next two spots. Wayne Manchester won a highlycompetitive Second Division main while Tim Gewecke, a former Junior star, easily outdistanced the pack in Third Division. Kevin Nicklas took J unior honors over Danny Wright an d Chris Werner. Results SCRATCH: 1. Bobby Schwanz (Wesl; 2. Bobby On (Wesl; 3. Oubb Ferrell (Wes) . HOCP: 1. Walt Farnum (Jaw); 2. Schwartz streaks at Costa Mesa Spdwy By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, MAY 6 Kawasaki Night at the Orange County Fairgrounds provided a number of surprises for the crowd of nearly 6000. Free Kawasaki posters and caps were given away as factory motocross riders Jeff Ward, Ron Lechien and Jeff Matiasevich were on hand to chat with fans and sign autographs. O n the track, there were . no surprises, however, as Bobby Schwartz walked home with most of the loot after winning the Scratch main for the third consecutive week. It was Schwartz on his Budweiser/ T oys for Pops/ Oakley/ Bell/e.T .!. Brace Weslake who led the four-ri der parade into the first turn. Steve Lucero came off the pole for second on the start but he ended up in a thrilling war with arch rival Bobby O tt. Ott continually tried to pull along the outside of Lucero but he couldn't find the dri ve over the first couple of circuits. The front of the pack was all Schwartz, who left the others behirid as he worked his way closer to a sweeping Scratch competition. Ott's persistence finally paid off at the end of the third trip around the track. He viciously threw his bike to the wall as he came off turn four and in spectacular fashion found the drive and blazed ahead of Lucero for second. That was as far as he got though as Schwartz won it by 20 feet. Jay Gianetti seemed to come off the line slow when the starting gate was activated to begin the eight-lap Handicap main, but by the time he 'came off of turn two , he and the EI Ranchito/Visions In GraphicslTroy Lee Design/R&S Tire ServicelTeam Crusher Weslake had commandeered the lead from Trinon Cirello. Greg Hancock was just behind the early pace setters. . , Gianetti was advancing his lead while Scotty Brown, who was com ing through the pack, bit the dirt when he tried to avoid a slower rider before the halfway p oi n t. Billy Hamill forced his way past Hancock at the end of the third circui t, and one lap later, Hancock fell and was out of contention. Alan "Crazy" Christian came on to challenge Hamill for third on lap five until Hamill ducked inside Cirello and took second. Christian followed Hamill by Cirecllo but that was as far as he could get. Gianetti had been oblivious to all of th e action behind him and could've coasted across the line. Instead he pulled a massive wheelie (or the fans . Hamill grabbed second with Christian third.
