Stegall had a good start and capitalized on it , leading the class most of the way. In the 80cc Open class, there were no surprises as Racin ' Rowdy Flanagan holeshot the start and flew arou nd the track. He was followed by J ohn Schultz. Bennett was the overall winner in the l25cc class at the AMA last chance area qualifier held at Mesa Raceway. In the first moto Cagiva-rnounted Robby Clauss got the hol eshot and held the lead throughout 'the entire moto . Rogers on romps at MontroseMX By Hurley & Dot Sl}ort RAEFORD, NC, MAY 8 Cagiva-mounted Kent Rogerson came from second to nab the wins in both of the 250cc Novice motos for the overall victory at Montrose SEMX. In the first moto Hank Mason, on a Kawasaki, grabbed the holeshot ahead of Rogerson. They were followed by Howard Musi ck on a Yamaha and Heith Hatchell, also on a Yamaha. Rogerson was in hot pursuit and made it pa st Mason with Mu sick hanging on to hi s third place. In the second moto Mason made it out of the ch ute ahead of Rogerson again with Michael Sparks on a Honda and Musick behind them. Rogerson pulled a repeat of the first moto and pa ssed Mason, Musi ck followed closely and they finished in . that order. First overall went to Rogerson, followed by Mason, Musick and Sparks. Pearce, Hale top Bakersfield ST By Laura Tisinger BAKERSFIELD, CA, MAY 6 Rick Pearce dominated the 250cc Pro class in the heat and main - even t action at round three of the l5-race series at Bakersfield Speedway . Pearce piloted hi s Kawasaki for the holeshotand gave contenders no mercy as he lengthened his lead for the win. Mike Hale" powered his 600cc Honda for the early lead and win in the 600cc Pro class heat and main event win . Both Pearce and Hale are veterans at this track and their smooth lines proved their ability. The 600cc Amateur class held the . closest competition as Pat Bride and Don Glendening went at it lap for lap in heat and main event racing. Glendening piloted his Kawasaki for the lead in the heat over Bride. Bride held his ground staying close at second. Chad Ellis held a consistent third. All positions remained the . sam e at the flag with Glendening claiming the heat win over Bride. Glendening gained the lead over Bride at the start of the main, but Bride pressured through the straights. The lead was too close to call as each rider took a different line. Gl endening came out of the turns just ahead of Bride for the first four ' . laps. Bride then poured it on to pull out for the clear lead in the remaining two laps. Domke SAN ANTONIO, TX, MAY 1 J.J. Slagle from Wilmer, Texas, captured first place in three classes in the Loretta Lynn's Area Qualifier at Goodtimes MX. Slagle aced the l25cc Stock Novice the l25cc Modified Novice and the l25cc Modified (12-15). Chris Ryan gave Slagle a challenge coming ~n second in the Novice, Stock and fourth in the Novice Modified. Chad Christian placed second in the Modified class and fifth in the Stock. Honda rider Marcus Pepper placed third in both classes. . In the 85cc classes, Clint Carlton, a l2-year-old from Forestbur~, T exas, was totally awesome. HIS bright red Honda showed its rear fender to the other riders in the 85cc Stock and Modified classes. His main competitor was Rowdy Flanagan, who has been one of the consistent best riders in the Minis at Goodtimes. Sch wartz shines at Speedway USA By Scott Daloisi o VICTORVILLE, CA. MAY 7 Bobby Schwartz scored a clean sweep in the Scratch main as Speedway USA switched to its traditional Saturday night schedule. Schwartz drew the main event pole position for his Budweiser/Silkolene/KNAC/Russell & Russell / Cirello Weslake, and that was all he needed. Schwartz gated "Showtime" Bobby Ott and that was the beginning of the end for the competition. Ott went wide as the pack slid off the second bend on the opening hip and that gave "Dangerous" Dubb Ferrell a clear lane on the inside. Ferrell pounced on his chance but Schwartz and Ott beat him in the drag race to tum three. , Schwartz soon had enough of his competition and he used the lightning-quick track to race away from the other riders. Even though he had made it a runaway, the race was still a thriller as Ferrell and Ott staged a sizzling duel. Ferrell manned the inside while Ott took his usual outside line. They stayed that way all the way to the white flag. Ferrell went wide and that was all Ott needed as he streaked underneath but still finished a distant second to Schwartz. Third went to Ferrell with Brad Oxley fourth. Billy Gray used his 20-yard-line starting position to his advantage when he shot into the lead and set a blistering pace over the first three circuits of the Handicap main.
