Palenske tops Not-SoTuff-E-Nuff Enduro By Kit Palmer 38 LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, MAY I Team 'G reen Kawasaki 's Grant Palenske (O 'Neal, Metzeler, Scott, Cycle Service Racing, Shoei, Spectro, Tsubaki, Acerbis) piloted his endurized KX250 to the overall victory at the AMA/District 37 Not-So-Tuff-E. Nuff Enduro, put on by the United Enduro Association. The 250 AA rider played catch-up for most of the , day to Vet A rider and last month 's district overall winner Lowell Spiva, who ended up piloting his Honda CR 250 to second overall, only 30 seconds behind Pa lenske, 8.05408.0570. " We can't let these Vets beat us," joked Palenske after the event. "T ha t would be two in a row for Spiva." It would've been two in a row for Spiva had it not been for the secondto-last special test, where Palenske . gained a full point on Sp iva, putting Pal enske and Spiva into a tie with one special test left. It was there that Palenske gained 30 seconds on Spiva to clinch the win. " "In the first special test of the day ," said Palenske. "Lowell beat me by a full point. He got a 0:58 and I got a 1:16. For the rest of th e end u ro , I was slightly gaining on Lowell in the tie-breakers, but in th e secondto-last special test I got a 0:54 and he got a one-something. That put us tied, and in the last special test I got a I :38 and I think Lowell got a 1:58." The two-loop, 80-plus mile UEA course was described by Palenske as " grea t. The terrain was real good, and the UEA did a great job, except for some confusion at a couple of the checks." Third overall went to Palenske's Team Green teammate Paul Krause, who was keying off Palenske. With no timekeeping equipment, Krause nearly kept up to Palenske's pace and dropped nine points. "He (Kra use) was never more than 100 feet beh ind me," said Pa lenske. Krause took the Open A class vic tory . . McSwain was virtually unchallenged as he made the tough, 14-mi le course loo k easy. It rained for three days prior to the event and that made some of the lo w sections extremely muddy and difficu lt to negotiate. The mud made for some good racing III all the classes a nd many p roduced class lead changes. The 250cc class had six leaders wi th Rick Warner surviving for the wi n. Keith Almond took second j ust seconds behind the lead er. The fig h t for third place produced a wild shoot-out between Tommy Ashley and Donny Graham. Graham p lowed past Ashley in the final mudhole just 20 yards from the finish and slid his bike into the scoring barrels, clearing ou t scorekeepers and spectators, to take third. Farrel Smith and Husky representative Mark Hosbach diced in the Open class , swapping the lead numerous times. Smith came out on top. Baer gated third behind Jerry Hash and J im Lynch in the 600cc Amateur class.
