Jacks racks Roebling RoadRR By Bob Applegate 52 FAULKVILLE, GA, APR. 16-17 Ei gh te en-yera-old Donald J acks turned back row starts into wins in both th e Middlew eight GP and H eavyweight Supe rsport races in AMA/CCS act io n at Roebling Road Ra ceway. Saturday's program saw Florida's racing p o li cern an , Ri ck Shaw , lau nch hi s Yamaha FZRlooO from th e third ro w for the hol eshot in th e Unlimited GP race. It was a dogfight ' for the lead with rookie expert Mik e Sm ith pushing Shaw in th e turns o nly to be outmotored by Shaw 's 1000 on the strai g h t. At the flag it was Shaw by a mere half-a-wheel over th e hard charging Smith 's Suzuki. The Lightweight GP event was a mix of machiries with Atlanta's Cam Roos campaigning a new Yamaha FZR400 to win over Greg Easer on a Honda RS250 and Smith on a Yamaha Rl.'l50. Roos pushed th e new Yamaha to the limit turning consistant I:20 laps for the win . Shaw rounded out his day with a flag -to-flag blitz in th e'IOOKMSoio GTO Endurance race while Troy Sorensen came from the back row to blister 38 other GTU co mpetitor s on th e 1987 Team Uno GTU endurance bike. Honda Hurrica nes commanded the top nine fin ishing positions . in that GTU race. On Sunday, Smith outlasted Jeff Burck for the win in Ligh tweight Superbike. It would prove to be Smith's last good race of the weekend as he cra shed in both the Heavyweight Supersport a n d Middleweight events. " I ran the lowe r fairing to give th e sponsors some credit and wound up dragging it until it picked the front tire up," Smith said about th e 750 crash, then "I was running two-raceold tires and just got cau ght up in the excitemen t and the front end went a way , " h e lamented after seri ousl y damaging his Roswell Honda-sponsored Hurrican e in th e Middleweight fray. . Randy Kirnec waved th e flag for H ar ley-Davidson in th e Supertwins ra ce, beating out a fast field of Ducati s and Moto Guzzis for th e number on e spot. Young Donald Jacks snooked th e old man , Rick Sahw, in a last lap, last turn pass that netted the Suzukimounted rider a dramatic win. Shaw , Smith and Jacks swa pped leads in a superfast freight train race with Smith braking later and later into fast turn on e until cras hing in turn two . Shaw led J acks on th e final la p com ing out of turn nine, doing a radi cal tai l-shaking maneuv er to try and get Ja cks out of th e draft, but Ja cks shot by for th e win. " It was a loss of mom entum for R ick, I saw it com ing and go t him wh en he moved over to .hJ:eak the dr aft " said a wi ser-thari-his-years J acks. Hot novi ce David Kamps pi cked up two wins after a lesson-learnin g cras h earlier in the weekend .
