In the O pen A class it was Gear Racewea r 's Tim Coombs taking the victory ahead of H ondamounted Jim Queen and Da vid Bachman . H and took a back seat to Kan e a nd Suzuki pilot Emery Anden in th e first 250cc A rnoto, bu t when the seco nd heat go t underw a y Hand tucked in behind Crowe until th e last lap when he found a clear line through some lappers lO record the moto a nd overall wins. In th e -q uarter-Iiter class H and followed Ya maha h otsho e Mark Neiderhiser , Anden, and D. Coom bs throughout the entire mo to u n ti l a last lap sh uffle saw Coombs move into the lead wi th H and shadowing. The seco nd mot o sa w Kawasak imounted Jimmy Kni sley lead everyone right u p until the last la p , bu t Coombs a nd H and both go t by as th e tri o closed in o n th e checkers. Wi th less than 100 yar ds to th e finish line tabletop Hand stuffed inside o f Coombs in a slo w left-h ander to take his second overall win of the da y. In th e Open Expert ranks Tim Coombs' took adva ntage o f two fast starts to best Queen a nd th e rest of the big bike riders. Queen was good for a pa ir of runner- up finishes behind Coombs wh ile Bachman ra n 5·3 to top th e 3-5 score of Chris Durham. With th e 335 riders in a ttenda nce, th e Ama teur and Youth cla sses sa w full starting ga tes a t High Point, Suzuki-m ounted Mike McD onald was the big winner, taki ng home first place trophies in both the 125 and 250cc B classes .
