The Our y/ Scott/Tsubaki/ WD40/ JT R acing / AXO /Cody-Jawa sponsored La zor won the title by bea ting fellow New York r iders Warren Diem and Bruce Nelson . After winni ng th e " Big Fro zen Banana," as th e National title race is call ed, Lazor collected $1000 a nd th e Silver I.e.E. Bucket, which is given a n n ua lly to th e N ational champ. Each of th e 16 riders in th e battl e for the cha m pions hip rode in four heat races, which pa id th ree po in ts to 'win , two points for second and a point for third. Lazor won all four of the heats he entered, pocketing 12 points. H e was joined o n the front row for th e main event by Diem, who colle ted II points, and Nelson who earned 10. A last ch ance q ua li fier to fill th e three open positions on th e back row of the six -ri der, six -lap main event was won b y J ohn Kehoe, 'w h o jumped to a n early lead a nd held it for the entire race. John L ewis of New York held third for most of th e race , fightin g hard to hold off New York's La nce Darsow and Col orado's Sco tt Ormisto n . On th e last lap , h o w ever, Darsow 's relentless charge paid off when he passed Lewis to grab third place a nd the final tra nsfer spot: When the starting tape wen t up in th e main even t, it marked a wild, six-bike sp ri nt to the first corner. Lazor mad e it through th e turn ·first with Diem hot on hi s ta il a nd Keh oe corning from th e back row to claim th ird . As La zor begari to inc h away fro m Diem , the backmarkers were locked in a dogfi gh t. Darsow passed Keh oe to take over third , and Nelson had slipped to a lonely fifth . As th e di cing con tin ued , 'Darsow crashed and Nelson went back on th e offensive to pass Keh oe. When th e chec kere d flag flew, it saw a su pe r stro ng first pl ace finish by Lazor. H e was unbeaten for the night even though th e o ther ri ders each had been give n two shots a t him. Diem finished second with Nelson fighting hi s way u p to th ird place. Riner took second and Kaufman fin ished thir d. Moto two saw Honda rider Tom H ollister ta ke th e holeshot wi thH onda-mounted Ed H ays secon d and Adams third . By lap two Adams was in first : place with Czajhawski and J o nes moving up. At th e finish it wa s Ada ms first, J ones seco nd, H ays third and Czajhawski fourth. J ones took th e overa ll win with 12 mo to finish es. Moto one of th e Mini Stock class saw H onda-mounted Steve Olson out fron t wi th the holeshot, followed by Honda p ilot Will y Bowden a nd H odes. By lap three H odes led Ol son in second, J eff Dem ent in third a nd H onda rider H ea th Kirtland in four th. Dem ent crashed a ttempting to pass Olson over a jump.
