Wh en th e ga te dropped to start the second mo to Sell ards took th e lead with Perry, Agin, Rob Yenulon is and Barnett giving chase. On the first lap Perr y and Yenulonis were bo th dispensed of by Agin and Barn ett. Agin began reeling in Sellards until the two riders were running a tireto- tire ba ttle through each tu rn and side-by-side over th e jumps. Barnett close d in o n th e two fro nt ru nners midway th ro ugh th e race. Agin took th e lead fro m Sellards, bu t bo th found them selves o n the ground and Barn ett found him self in first place. Sella rds mo unted his H onda a nd took second but Agin ret aliated wi th in th e same lap and once agai n o vertook' Sell ards. Barnett took the checkers by a slim two seconds ahead of Agin , wh o was closely followed by Sell ards, Yenulonis and Perry to round o ut the top five. H onda rid er Mike Howell rode two flawl ess start- to-fin ish motos to tak e th e win in th e 80cc (14-15) class. H owell gra bbed th e lead th rough turn one and quickl y left the pack of riders behind him. J ason Balas, T im Co nti and Gen e Kell y mad e it a three-way race for second after T im Boca popped hi s chain a nd co uldn 't contin ue. Conti moved into second wit h Bal as roostin g past Kell y wit h on e la p remaining. H owell was tra iled by Kell y and Balas whe n moto two go t underwa y. Once again H owell just kept goi ng a nd never looked back. The three riders hel d their posi tio ns for four laps u nti l Bal as was fin all y able to pass Kell y for second. Conti and Boca finis hed fo urth a nd fifth. Yamaha-mounted, J B Race Prod.bac ked J ohn Sha y sco red do ubl e moto win s in the 250cc and Open A classes. In mo to one Sha y, H onda rider Greg Wh eeler a n d Suzu kimounted Pete Ma urice ran one-two three for the ent ire seven lap moto. Marcus Sellards worked his wa y th ro ugh the field of riders from a n eig ht h p lace start to take hold of fo ur th . Sella rds held the lead briefly a t th e sta rt of mo to two as Sh ay took over th e top spot by th e fourth turn. Sell ards held second foll owed by Maurice and Wheeler. R iding the Shoei/ Kal-Gard/ Oilza IIlST P/ K&N Godde n, Lucero ga ted the field and when they reac hed tu rn one, he pl a nt ed him self firm ly on the blue goove that was present almos t all th e way around the track. Bobby Schwartz was o u t second followed by L ou is Kossuth a nd Bobby O tt. Kossuth fou n d the inside and challenged Schwa rtz as they hit turn th ree th e first time and shocked everyo ne whe n he bulled th e former Nat ional Ch ampion out of th e way. Kossu th stayed on the groove and he hacked away a t Lucero 's adva ntage unt il he was directl y on Lucero 's rear tire. Lucero guarded the pole a nd Kossuth wou ld ha ve to u se the outside to pass. Kossu th elected .to stay di rectl y beh ind Lucero and . ho ped fo r th e leader to make a mi scu e. Lucero seldo m mak es an error a nd he didn 't and co llected hi s second victory- in a row. Kossuth a nd Schwartz finished right beh ind him and all .threei co u ld have fit under ' a blanket. ' Kelcey Gordon won hi s heat and the semi a nd he was the initial lead er in the eigh t-la p Handicap main, as Kevin Krugh tumbled to th e ground in th e first turn. Gordon had Walt Farnum and Bart Bast shooting a t h im ear ly in the event. Farnum got off the groove and looked to the outside of Gordon a t the end of the second circuit. That was costly since th e outside wa s dry and before Farnum co u ld come back t o th e groove, Bast and Gary Hi cks surged by. Bast hit turn one hard on lap four and he flicked Gordon's front tire and sent him to the outs ide where he eventually fell. H icks stayed low and it paid off as he went inside of Bast in turn three on lap five.Io r th e lead. Seconds later , Oxley also got by Bast. H icks p layed it safe the remainder of the way . Pestana pops Baylands MX By Mike Vanci l FREMONT, CA, APR. 27 J eff Pestana topped th e 125cc Pro class ton ight a t Baylands Ra cewa y Park and a lso finished second behind Shaun Wooten in the 250cc Pro class. Kell y Andris ma naged to win the O pen Pro class a nd take a third in the 250cc ranks. . In the 125cc Pro class it was early lea der Dann y Pal adin o t ha t appeared to have th e course wired. T his was not 0 be as Pestana reeled h im in and hot by in th e high banked turn two left-hander. The race order remained Pestana, Paladin o and Todd Hicks to the checkers. The second moto was o nly different in th at Pestana mad e his pass goi ng over the huge tabl etop jump and H icks rode a more ins p ired race to really worry Pal adino th e entire moto. In th e 250cc Pro class Pestana was able to earn a spo t in the payoff ros ter by ga rneri ng two second pl aces behindWooten a nd his rapid Ka wasaki. Ear ly in the fir st mo to it was Eri c Sandstrom, Woot en a nd J on Nels on leadin g the way. A few laps into th e event Nelson wh isked in to th e lead but cras hed . Woot en was able to ingerit a nd ho ld th e point un til th e checkers came o ut but Pestana had to wor k extremely hard to ge t by Sandstrom and ho ld off Andris for second. In the second moto Woo ten- hel d the lead for the entire d istance. Co mi ng off with a vengeance was bo th Andris a nd Pestana wi th Pestana getting th e bett er lines through the roc ker sectio n for second. Wooten co u ldrr' t : be ca ught a nd Pest ana wasn 't too far beh ind at the end. In th e Open P ro clas h th ere were early moto ba ttles betw een Andris, Sea n Conley and Clayton Blood, but in the end Andris was ab le to pull away a nd ride co mforta bly in fro n t of his adversaries. In both rnotos it was Blood across th e lin e after Andris whi le Conley hung on for thi rd both times o ut. These placin gs ga ve him second overa ll behind winner Duane Hughes. Yam ah a ro ad ra cer Kocinski re po rted ly borrowed a Kenny Roberts Yam aha 125 a nd came to Baylands to play. The play became serious when he took a safe second place in the first moto after working up to that position. H e followed T yler Hummell on a Suzuki across the line. Greg Moreau (Suz). liedberg dominates Skyline MX opener By Dale Bohm DAYTON, 10, APR. 30 Newgate Honda 's Steve Li edberg posted a perfect four-for-four moto sweep of th e 125 a nd 250cc Pro classes a t th e fir st-ever event a t Skyline MX Park. In 250cc Pro action Liedberg was quick off the gate followed by Brian Levitt, Matt Jenkins and Scott Nielson. Larry Jackson was mired midpack, but was on the move and quickl y displaced riders until he was in third. Up front, Leidberg continued to lead , but wa s being sta lked from' beh ind by Nielson. Nielson passed L iedberg on lap five of the eight-la p mo to as a ba ttl e for fourth develo ped between Co rky Ma ughan and Brad Boulton, wi th the nod goin g to Boulton. On the last lap Nielson was seen pushing hi s bike off th e track, a victim of a broken linkage on his H onda. Liedberg cruised to th e win a hea d of J ack son, Boul ton , Maughan and Richard T af t. Mo to two was a nother Liedb erg hol esh o t followed by Levitt, J enkins, J ackso n and Maughan. Levitt bit the dust shortly after the start, leaving J enkins to hold off a determined J ackson. J ackson moved by on lap two and quickl y set o ut after Liedberg. Bou lton was also on the move and shot past Maughan for fourt h . Up fron t, Liedberg main tain ed a six second lead over Jackson, to th e finish, whil e Boulton mov ed by Jenkins on lap six to claim third. - In 125cc Pro action Nielson stole the start and immediately pulled out a small lead. Li edberg was stuck in the !pte off the start, but was soon picking off riders a nd mov ed into second behind Ni elson. Li edberg and Nielson battled tooth-and-nail, with th e nod going to Liedberg. Second moto action saw Liedberg grab the holeshot over Lance Walker
