Schwartz, Ott winners at Ascot Speedway By Scott Daloisio GARDE NA, CA, AP R. 28 After two weeks of rain-outs, Chris Agajanian's Ascot South Bay Stadium swung back in to action with Bobby Schwartz and "Showtime" Bobby O n walking o ff with the la urels in Scratch and Handicap . ma ins. Sch wartz, o n the Malcolm Smith/ C.T .I. Bra ce/BiIdwei ser/ STP/K&N Filters Wes lake, rocketed from the pole position on the start into the lead of the Scratch ' main. Steve Lucero , w ho was off the line in second, and his bitter rival O n came togeth er in the second turn . and became invo lved in a ra vagi ng bump ing a nd elbowing COOlest. By the time they rea ched the back chute, Lucero had wrestled seco nd away, bu t they were noi done with each other. L ucero then tried lo chase down the leader but he would h a ve to use the wide line a s Schwartz was glu ed lo the inside pipe. Lucero couldn't find the drive and when th e Roy Ketting checkered flag signalled an end to the four lapper, Schwartz took the win with 20 feet to spare. Oxley took third with On, who fell in the fina l -turn. fourth . In the eight-lap Handicap main . Trinon Cirello, .Greg Hancock and Billy Hamill occupied the top th ree spots at the outset while Bart Bast a nd On were slici ng their way th ro ugh the slower traffic in an effort to ge t lo the fro nt. O il was fire d up and h e wheeled the Bal boa Im p orts/ Cire ll o R a ci n g / ST P Wes lake th ro ugh the field . He split Bast and Hamill on the back chute o n lap four. T hen advanced 111 th e way to second. Cirello had a bul gi ng lead and O il wo u ld h ave had to fly over the last half of the race to catch him, b u t a red flag, due to a tangle J n volvin g D ubb Ferrell and Bast, brought the proceedings to a halt with four laps lo go. . For the restart, Cirello had O il starting alongside of him. Oil commandeered the point position before they reached turn one on the restart • and he quickly rode away for an easy win. Cirello hung onto the second place spot while Oxley clawed his way from the back lo third. Barnell rounded the first turn at the start of rnoto one and was clearly the rider to beat as he jumped to a quick seven-second lead within tfie first two laps. G reg Wheeler, Sel lards, Keith Perry and Jon .Again trailed Barn ell thro ugh turn one, Sellards dropped off the pace and Wheeler dropped back to fourth.
