Matter on the move at Perris MX By David Procida PERR IS, CA, APR. 16 Donnie Mauer rode to a pair of moto wins for the 250cc Beginner victory in SMX Motocross. In moto one Suzuki pilot Tarek Saba grabbed the holeshot on th e . 250/500 line with Honda-mounted Brett ca m p in g and Ernie Maes , aboard a Yamaha, right behind him. Sa ba opened up a ,b ig lead on Camping and Maes, who was th e first rider to change the top three positions by flying past Camping over a series of jumps and going into second. A battle for the lead eruped as Maes began pres suring Saba. Maes mad e his move in the tight comer and went into the lead. Camping got out of shape and went down hard, giving up third to Robert Teufel, who was bei ng. pressured by Dean McCau ley. Mauer, who had moved to second, went into the lead when Maes stalled in a corner. Maes was .quickly underway allowi ng only Saba to slip by, but th is was just the starting of Maes problems. With the white flag o ut, Maes was centerpunched by a lapped .rider while exiting a corner and finished eight. Up front, Matter took the win with McCauley and Teufel rounding out the top three. In moto two a large first-turn pileup required a restart. The restart made no difference to Saba as he holeshot both times. Kyle Smith jumped in behind Saba as the pack followed closely behind through th e first tum. As the riders began to sort themselves out. Matter began to thread his way up to the front. On lap three Saba went down, giving the lead to Smith, who had Malter breathing down his collar. The next la p saw Mauer in the lead with Smith a nd Teufel making the top three. At the checkered flag, Mauer had a big lead on second-place Dave Ivory, an Open Begi nner rider, who in turn led McCau ley across the finish. Ma u er took the overall with McCauley second and Teufel third. Results VET EX: 1. Kin Goldie (Han); 2. Mar ino Bast ionell (Suz); 3 . Ken Ratzlaff (Han). VET INT: 1. Scott Freeman ( H on~ 2. Schwartz, Bast top Costa Mesa Spdwy By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, APR. 20 Bobby Schwartz and Bart Bast raced off with the bigges t portion of promoter H arry Oxley's prize money after winning the Scratch a nd Handicap mains, respectively, on KNAC Radio Night a t the Ora nge Cou nty Fairgrounds. Schwartz drew the pole for the four-lap Scratch main bu t he would have his work cut out for him as his competition consisted of Alan Christian, Bobby' Ott and Brad Oxley. When th e tapes shot up. Schwartz ~ot a near perfect gate and stormed mto the first tum with the rest of th e field in tow. Ott, out of gate three, tried to sweep around Schwartz on the back chute but was taken to the wa ll and forced to back out of the throttle. Christian made it a threerider brawl for the lead at th e end of th e' inaugural lap when he went inside Ott. H e and Ott became embro iled in the best race of the night just a few inches behind the leader's rear tir e. Schwartz, who won her e last week, hooked up and wh eelied just before the halfway point, but before Christian or Ott could exploit that maneuver, he pulled ' it back down and continued on in first. The battle for second intensified with Christian almost collecting a piece of O tt in turn one on la p three. At the same time, they were crawling all over the rear tire of Schwartz's Budweiser/C.T .I. .Brace/SCAR/Silkolene/Quiksilver Wes lake. The three stars rampaged around the circuit in tight formation over the last two la ps and when the checkered came down, it was Schwartz by a bike over Christian and Ou. In the eight-lap Handicap main Kelcey Gordon started alone on the 20 and shut the door on Bast on lap two . Bast, jockeying the potent Bast Bros. Welding/Sierra/Brant Eng.! Justice Brothers/Team Trim/Oakley Weslake, finally knifed his way by the stubborn Gordon at the end of the third trip around the track and took the lead. Once Bast took the point, he was gone. Keith Larsen quickly followed Bast and got by Gordon but he had to be content with second as there was no way he could chop down the leader's advantage. Ott and Oxley, fresh off their appearance in .the Scratch main, slipped into third and fourth on lap five but like Larsen, it was too little too late. The on ly position charige came on the final circuit when Oxley muscled h is way past Ott. When Jerry King threw out the checkered cloth, it was Bast by a wide margin over Larsen and Oxley.
