Phil Lawrence (191 leads 250cc Intermediate winner Chad Pederson in the first moto. Lawrence was first overall in the 125cc division. Pederson collects win at Porterville GSN laps from the finish both Buttle and Goodman passed the rapidly deteriorating Bennett and slipped into third and fourth. Back up front Pederson started to catch Lawrence but bobbled and fell off the pace. At the checkered flag Lawrence took the win over Pederson, Hughes, Buttle, and Goodman. Jeremy McGrath gated perfectly in the secondmoto to lead Pederson, Bennett, Ray Crumb and Hughes into the first turn. Lawrence was in ninth and rapidly picking up positions. As the riders came around to complete lap one Lawrence had moved up' to fourth with Crumb a distant fifth. Halfway through the moto Pederson and McGrath started to go at it for th e lead. McGrath tried to pull awa y but nothing seemed to be working. With only a couple of laps left McGrath over-jumped a double, started swa pp ing and nearly too k o u t Ped erson. McGrath so meh o w managed to hold onto hi s Yamaha and maintain the lead, but less than a lap later Pederson got a good dri ve out of a berm and passed McG ra th down th e finish straight. McG rath then retaliated and tried to By Ken Faught PORTERVILLE, CA, FEB. 14 Fort Dodge, Iowa's Chad Pederson piloted ,h is Yamaha to a victory in the 250cc Iiiterrnediate class at round seven of the CMC/ Dodge Truck Golden State Nationals at Spinners Airport Raceway. First moto action saw Pat Bennett ge t the holeshot over Phil Lawrence, Ryan Hughes, 26 Pederso n and J ason Buttle. Lawrence immedi at ely moved into th e lead with Pederson taking over seco nd as Bennett dropped to th ird. Shortl y into the moto Pederson , passed La wrence and started to pull aw ay. Wh ile Pederson was setting a blisteri ng pace out front Hugh es moved into third as Bennett started to fade back. Up front Pederson went down in a corner, handing Lawrence th e lead over Hugh es. Pederson got up an d underw ay in th ird , and within a lap ca ugh t and passed Hughes, th en o nce agai n set after Lawrence. Buttle was now starting to catch Bennett as was Grayson Goodman. Bennett, wh o once led the rac e, started to q uicken his pace but it wasn't fast enough. Less than two repass Pederson in the following turn, but th e pass didn 't materialize. 'With much of the attention being focused on the Pederson/McGrath battle Lawrence had passed Bennett and was now third, far behind the leaders. Pederson went on to take the win followed by McGrath, Law-... renee, Bennett and Crumb. ' A 2-1' score ga ve Pederson the overall, Lawrence was second with I an 11-3, Bennett finished third with a 6-4 tally, Hughes claimed fourth with a 3-7 and McGrath was fifth with a 10-2 score. Yamaha-mounted Larry Lawrence won both motos and the overall in division one of the 250cc Juniors. When th e gate dropped at the start of the first moto Chris Ridgway holeshot Charlie Flippen, Lawrence, Guy Comer and Steve Nelson. Flippen' and Lawrence wasted no tim e and quickly shot by Ridgway and into first and secon d. After getting seventh Ralph Blanchard took control of fourth with Marc Matson close behind.
