Meanwhile Carroll closed th e gap on White, while Mark Tiesler, Kurt McM illen, Tippin and Ed Foedish were having their own battle. At th e finish Lachowicz shut out the competition and took first and the overall win. Carroll finished second overall. McMillen cop ped a third in the moto but fourth overall with White revers e in finishes. Fifth in the moto was pulled down by Foedish but fifth overall went to Tippin. ~ 00 c-r ~ v ..0 o ..... Results u o Shawn Roberti (99) and Joe Pittman battle in the second 750 Production heat at Portland. Roberti won the heat. but Pittman took the overall. line less than a bike length a head of Perry. Moto two was a tire-to-tire battle between Boggia-and G ardiner from start-to-finish. Boggia took the early lead a nd remained out front for over two laps when th e hard-charging Gardiner was finally abl e to maneuver around the front runner. The two riders rode tire-to-tire lapafter-lap, as Gardiner wa s never able 10 get more than a second lead on Boggia. In the final tum Boggia wa s clo se behind and as Gardiner hit th e berm Boggia clipped Gardiner 's back tire and went down. Gardener to ok the ch ec kered flag first a s Boggia dropped to fourth in th e overall standings. Barney Barnett was th e hands down winner in the 125cc Expert class. Barnett routed his H onda through th e first turn ahead of Keith Perry and Rob Yenulonis in both motos. McCarter mauls CalhounMX By Jeff Jacobsen 32 CALHOUN, GA, SEPT. 27 Mitch McCarter sponsored by Gear Racewear, Team Yamaha Su pport, Mid-State Kawasaki & Yamaha, E & N Machine Shop and Interstate Cycle, blew all competi tion away in the Open ra ce today at Calhoun. No one came anyw h ere near him as he ea sily jumped over th e double jumps and then so me. Chris Addison, on a borrowed bike, flew around the track for the second spot with Jeff Leford behind. R ick y L a m b didn 't h ave a ny trouble winning the Over 30 moto with Fred Hull a n d Chester Ro lan d changing spots for second. Hull was in second in the first moto 'u n til his throttle stuck so Ro la nd sho t into second . Hull had n o trouble in th e second moto keeping th e seco nd spot and won second overa ll wh en points were totaled . Rod n ey Parker finall y took home . th e gold in the 125cc mo to. Pittman posts wins at Portland RR By Phillip Campagna and Tony Reiner PORTLAND, OR, SE PT. 27 Joe P ittm a n dis covered himse lf $2000 richer after bagging a 750cc Productio n win and taking seco nd in the O pen Pro duction race, as the Oregon Motorcycl e Road Racin g Association held it s fifth event at Port lan d In tern atio na l Ra ceway. The aggressive 'style of Bellevue Suzuki-sponsored Pittman seemed 10 be the ticket as he snagged the first heat of th e 750cc Production race with D.D.S. She p pard-s ponsored Mike Sullivan' in seco nd. T he seco n d heat turned o u t to be a differe nt story with Pittman ha ving a problem with Shawn Roberti. The race sta rted out with th e two b ikes o u t in front of th e pack and Doug Renfrow, sponsored by Bad Boys Racing, following in third. The di ce went on from sta rtto-finish with Pittman looking tired in the late laps, p robably due to entering five classes over the weekend. Robert i took th e flag first with Pittman shadowing. Pittman sti ll took first overall since Roberti did some off-road riding in the first heat. Australian Trinder showed Pittman his rear tire in both heats, making it two Open Production wins in a row for Trinder. Dale Franklin a n d hi s poten t TZ750 wiped up Formula One with Rich Rike won the Sen ior Mini class at Raceway Park. the gri d following beh in d. P ittma n tried his hand in the Fo rmula class ri di ng a borrowed Zlock Racin g Suzuki superbike and finished second with Dan Zlock taking th ird . The top three started to pull away from the rest of the pack as Carroll charged Lachowicz but Lachowicz closed the door. Each attempt was a sh utout but a determ ined Carroll never let off the gas . It was almost a p hoto finish as the two ran u nder th e checke r. Lachowicz p u lled do w n .a 'first, Carroll second, Carsten third, Mike Tippin and Charles White ro unded out th e top five for the first moto. Ma rk Nessa (Hon). ~ Chamberlaincharges to win at Barona Oaks MX By David Procida RAMONA, CA, SE PT. 27 Mike Chamberlain once again topped the l25cc Intermediate class as round fiv e of the eight-race Western USA Championship Seri es moved LO Barona Oaks. David Germain led the pack over the double jump and out onto the course in moto one with the Yamaha duo of Chamberl ain an d Jeremy McGrath less than a bike length behind. As th e riders used lap one to sort th emselves out th e pecking order at th e start of the second lap was G ermain , Chamberlain , McGrath, Chris Lara and Scott Connell y. Germain wasted little time in opening up a five second lead o n Chamberlain, who had his hands full with McGrath br eathing heavily down his ba ck. As the two YZ p ilots continued to test each other 's riding abi lities Lara, Connelly and Randy Den elo clo sed th e ga p an d . now it was a five rider freigh t train beari n g down on Germain. T hey closed th e gap o n Germain, but he h eld o n to a th ree second cus h io n. At' the end of m oto one it was G ermain wit h th e wi n foll owed by Chamberl ai n a n d l\IcG ra th still battl in g for second, while Richard Sax LOn a nd Lara ro u nded out the top five p ositions. . In m o to two Ge rma i n again jumped o u t into th e lead and for th e op en ing laps it looked to be a repeat o f m ote o ne . On lap three the Chamberlain-McGrath battle took the two within striking distance of Germain and made it a three m an dice for the lead. Chamberlain was the first to make a move on Germain and SLUffed th e Honda rider in a comer, taking the lead. On the start of the next lap McGrath went into second and had soon closed on Chamberlain where the two resumed the battle that had been going on earl ier. T he pair opened u p a little breath ing room w hen McGrath went down, but he was immediately back up an d re mounted in th e number four p osition where he remained for th e closing lap of the rno to. Sax ton LOok advantage of a tiring Germa in and went into second j ust before th e checkered and when the results were tallied it was Chamberlain with the overall win, Germain with second and Saxton, McGrath and Lara following. .
