Domke SAN ANTONIO, TX, OCT. 3 The first international race, 'Mo tocross '87, was held a t th e Good Times Motorsports Park and wh en both l25cc Intermedia te rnotos were over Pedro G onz al es from Mon terrey, Mexico, edg ed out T omas Escamilla to win first in th e class. Escamilla , also from Monterrey, had won th e first rnoto to Gonzales' second, but Gonzales reversed th e order in th e second rnot o, winning the co n test. Matt Harlan placed third and Jerry Gibson, Laredo, came in fourth. Keith Schaeffer rod e hi s Honda to an overall fifth place. . Szarek smokes Summit Point RR By Michael Green SUMMIT POINT, WV, SEPT. 26-27 Racing was close , fast and furious at the final AMA/CCS event of the year at Summit Point, West Virginia. . Local rider Glenn Szarek set th e fastest times of th e weekend on his Maryland Yamaha-sponsored FZ750 and pi cked up SlOoo in Yamaha contingency money for h is wins in Unlimited and Heav yweight Superbike. Szarek was challenged by Jeff Atwell in the Unlimited Superbike event until Atw ell 's well-worn Michelin radial slicks started to go away and Szarek took the win by several seconds. For the Formula One event Atwell fitted a fresh tir e to his Suzuki of York /Shoei/MachtoolistlSpectro GSXR750. Szarek led from ttle start but Atwell caught up after two laps and outbraked him ~ 00 c-r l-t V ..0 o ..... u o Jeff Atwell (7 6) and Glenn Szarek battle in F-1 action at Summit Point. David Murray was his co mpetition in both races and th e exci tement came as th ey carved their way through backmark ers around the tight, two-m ile circuit. Atwell took th e win in th e endura nce race by virt ue of spe nding less tim e in the pits during his refueling stop. Murra y led fro m the flag in th e Middleweight event bu t Atwell was close on hi s heels after two laps: Atwell stayed off th e brakes th e lo ngest as they drag ra ced side-byside into turn one at th e half way mark a nd cl ung on to th e lead fo r th e rest of the race. Rice cooks at LACR GP By Terry Rezek PALMDALE, CA, SEPT~ 27 Tami R ice took charge of the Women's Expert race at CRC's Grand Prix a t Los Angeles County Raceway. Rice and Bonnie Warch, both sponsored by Suzuki Country of Norco, dominated the 45 minute event, Rice had a wh eel .over the other riders com ing off the line but Warch pulled even in the first turn and came o u t of it with the lead . Mindy Smith was third Expert and joy Ames led th e No vices off th e line. Warch finished lap one with about a th ree seco nd lead and stretched it out enough over th e next two laps to be able to hold th e lead even after a bri ef cras h. Warch didn 't ha ve enough of a margin 10 afford two crashes , ho wever , a nd wh en she went down agai n o n la p four Rick took over th e lead. From th at point o n it was a lmost a Rice cakewa lk. Rice thought she had built a com forta ble lead wh en Warch ca ug h t fire la te in the race a n d cl osed to stri ki ng di st ance. Going into the last la p , it looked lik e Warch mi ght have a chance to regain th e lead until th e two leaders ran into a .gagg le o f slo we r riders . R ice sli p pe d through and Warch go t trapped, and that was th e race as Rice cru ised in th e win ner. Warch kept second and Sm ith fini shed third. Ames led the No vices all th e way for th e win. In th e GP format, all th e Beginners rid e together, with the 500s starting first, th en 250s, and finally th e 125s. J im Alexander, a 500 rider, got th e holeshot and led for severa l laps. Jeff McAllister worked his wa y up from near last and took the lead in th e middle of the race and went on for the 500cc win. Anthony Alexi made things simple in the 25Oc.c class , leading from th e green to the checkered and eventually taking the overall lead as well. The l25cc class saw a great battle between Jeff Ratzlaff and Rice. Rice, ho t from winning the Women's race, grabbed the hol eshot and led through lap six with Ratzlaff working hard to get around.
