Costa cooks in Florida RR By Jack Roe 28 TAMP A, FL, SE PT. 27 Ro bby Costa powered his H a p 's Honda -sponsored CBR H u rricane 600 to victory in com bined class 12-3 Endurance action, during round six of the Florida G rand Pri x R iders Association Road Race Seri es, held in Tampa. The start saw Eddie Kell y tak e th e lead, which h e he ld for three laps befo re ari overl y-aggressive novi ce p lanted his front en d into th e ba ck end of Kell y's FZ600, taking them both ou t. Rick H erndon, o n h is 15year-o ld H o nda 550, took over the lead. A ba ttl e developed be tween H erndon and Costa , which lasted for 23 laps; Costa was never more th an two bike len g ths behind H erndon. On the n ext lap, ' Herndon got th rou gh slo w traffic better th an Co sta a n d p ut a l illI e di st ance between th em. T hi s turned out 10 be a fut il e effort as Herridon th en went down in a large pool of newl y-spilled o il. H e was able to get restarted after losing two laps, a nd was able 10 make up one of them, taking fourth overall a n d a firs t in Class 2. After H endon 's fall , Costa 's lead was never chal- len ged. He finish ed first overa ll an d fir st in ChlSS 3. As in the first ra ce, th e two leaders provided sp ecta tors with gr eat racin g m com bined Class 4/5 Endurance action. After a sligh t delay to co pe with th e oi l spill, J erry Cook, aboard a GSXR750, led the race whi le Buzz Well s, on a nother GSXR 750, ran a very close seco n d. The duo qui ckly left th e rest of th e field beh ind. Well s tri ed every way he co u ld 10 pass Cook for 42 laps. Sometimes he was besid e Cook, and he was n ever more than two len g ths behind, bu t h e was unable 10 get by. Cook look th e overall an d Well s finis hed seco nd j ust inches behind. In th e sprint ra ces, Dave Rob icha us, aboard h is FZ600, had two strong finish es with first overa ll a nd firs t in class in the Cafe 3 and GP 1/2/ 3 events. H erndon thoroughl y do m in at ed the Cafe 1/2 feature, leading from start to fin ish. T he same co u ld be said for T odd Ousley, o n his very stro ng running FZ750, in both the Cafe 4/5 and GP 4/5 races; h e wo n by impressive margin s in both cases. T od ay, at round four, Ty ler and Ward exc hanged lead s throughout both m ot os in th e 250cc Pro class; T yler wo n th e seco nd an d m ost im portant to net a 2-1 overall wi n, as well as ca p turin g th e Open Pro class. T ony G ra ves' first overall wi n thus far in th e series ca me in th e 125cc Pro class, wh en he beat Ward. In th e Open Pro cla ss, T yler and Phil Larson dueled in both rnotos. T yler ca me out on top for a I-I win, wh ile Larson's 2-2 seco nd retained . h is class points lead. T yler ca me back to lead the first 250cc Pro rnoto, but the class points lead er took a sp ill, putting Ward wi th in a whee l. The duo exch an ged leads until th e later stages wh en Ward took a so il sample, givi ng Tyler the win. G rav es, Scott Steffy and Lance Smail fille d th e top five. Mot o two saw th e battle resume. Ty ler an d Ward p ush ed well o u t fro n t of th e duel wagin g for seco nd bet ween G ra ves, Steffy and Smail. Thin gs were looking good for Ward , who took co n trol of the mot o in th e later sta ges , until ' the final lap. That 's when Ward 's Yamaha slowed after sucking up silt, pu tt in g Tyler into th e lead wi th th e ch eckered flag in sigh t, good for a 2-1 overa ll win. G ra ves ' 3-2 perfo rmances n et ted seco n d foll owed by St eff y (4-3 ). Ward, who coasted ac ro ss th e line in sixth, was fourth overall a n d Sm ail took fifth aft er 5-4 rides. In th e l 25cc Pro class th e dust was so thick that wh oever wa s in th e lead n orm ally took th e win. That was th e case in both co ntes ts as Steffy and G raves exch an ged rn oto wins. Ward trail ed Steffy in th e first moto, unable 10 find a way past in th e choki ng dust, th erefore rel egated to seco nd in rnoto one a hea d o f G ra ves. Mot o two had Graves build up a good-s ized lead , cruising 10 th e chec kered flag . for a 3-1 win, hi s first overa ll in th e series. Ward 's 2-2 padded h is points lead while Steve Friesen rook th ird in th e mo to , b ut fo urth overa ll behind Steffy 's 1-5 ta llies. Bri an Birk estol wa s fifth. Boncyk blasts Baylands Motocross By Mike Va ncil FREMO NT , CA, OCT. 2 Steve Boncyk scored his first victory in the 125cc Beginner class in some wi ld race action at Baylands Raceway Park. In th e first moto Larry Moniz came from near midpack to zap everyo ne and tak e th e win a board his Honda. In the secon d rnoto the ch allenge wa s initially be tween Alex McManigill and Moniz. Moving up from midpack though was Joe Lawwill. In th e first moto Lawwill had finished third. A poor start got Lawwill about a seventh into th e first corner. By the th ird lap of the seven-lap rnoto he had worked 10 six th. On th e next lap he pushed into co n tention for first. In the short straightaway before th e rockers as the pack began th e last lap it was La wwill grabbing second place behind Boncyk. In just a Jew m ore yards La wwill took the lead, h owever, Lawwills' marge came to an en d. H e ~ot into a corner too.deep an d mired In th e so ft soi l just long enou gh to let four riders by. Hughes was really on a ro ll and not on ly beat o the r Vet Masters, but was we ll on h is way to getting a two rno to advantage on a visi ting professio nal who was practice ridi ng in this di vision. Quickes t a mong th e other riders in Hughes' class .was Randy Denton. Denton took two sec o n d place finishes behind Hughes. J ames Ptarcinski wa s th e domi· nate force in th e 80cc Beginner class. Ptarcinski go t a poor start in the first mo lO and was only able (0 work up to a seco n d place finish behind Jani Goyne. In th e second molO a better start for Ptarcinski and his Yamah'a put the sta m p of doom on the chances for Goyne. By lap three
