The fin al resul t hi nged upon the final rnoto , and the riders ended in a points' tie, but by virtue of Mat son winni ng the second moto the overa ll went his way. In the secon d mo to , Nelson go t tan gled up with fast-starting Bru ce Ma nzon i an d in trying to ge t ar ound him did n't effectively block Matson 's pass attempt. Fro m th at point on, Nelson p layed ca tch up. T his has been his specia lty at Baylands - start slow a nd pass everybo dy by the checkered flag. T his time it didn't work. Hand cleans up Meadowlarks MX By Peggy Adamic AMH ERST, OH, SEPT. 20 H onda-m ounted Da vid H and cruised to an easy victor y in the co m bi ned l25/250 /0pen Expert class a t Amhers t Meadowlarks motocross race. Wi th H and totally domina tin g th e class with two wire-to -wire mota wins, J ohn Ruper and Barney Barnett diced for second. In th e first moto H and was ou t front at th e d rop of th e ga te with Brunswick Suzu ki's Ruper and H onda rider Barnett trailing. T hree laps into the mot a H and was already eigh t seco nds ahead wh en Barnett was abl e to pass Ruper. Hand finished with a com manding 25 second lead over Barnett , Ruper and Perry: Ru per, Dale Taylor and Barnett followed Hand th rough turn one at the start of the second moto. Within th e first hald lap Barn ett h ad dispensed of Taylor a nd was quickl y on Ruper 's back tire . Wh ile Hand increased his lead , Barnett worked on Ru per. The two riders rode tire-totire a d side-by-side throughout th e 10 lap race wi th Ruper inch ing ou t Barnett each step of th e wa y. While Hand cruised th rough the checkered flag, Barnett en ded his pu rsu it, passing Ru per with less th a n a half lap to the finish. Taylo r held fou rth. Kaw asak i-m ounted Bryan Jones increased his .CR A poi nts lead in both the l2 5cc Schoolboy and l2 5cc B class as he swept both cla sses with th e sam e I-I mot o fin ishes. Ho nda rider Tony Boyas ho lesho t the first l 25cc B mo to wi th Mik e Cain a nd J on es in tow . Two laps later J on es had worked pas t Cain and set his sights on the fro n t ru nner. Wi th in a half lap , J ones ca ught an d passed Bo yas for the lead. Boyas too k th e chec kered flag fo ur seconds behi nd J on es foll o wed by Ca in . Steve Woo ledge rou ted his H o nda to th e first turn ahead of Boyas, Ca in and J ones to start the second mo to. By th e begining of lap two , J o nes had dispensed of Cai n a nd foll ow ed Boyas past Wooledge. Boyas held th e lead for two la ps as J on es pressured for the top spot and took co nt rol wi th two laps re mai ning. Bo yas too k second beh ind J on es with Wooledge and Cain holding onto thi rd and fourth. Jones put togeth er two wir e-towire moto wins to sweep the Schoolboy cla ss. Both tim es ou t, Wool edge tra iled J ones by six seconds at th e checkered flag. Mike Howell pilot ed hi s Honda to victory in the 80cc 14-1 5 class. H owell won with I-I mo to fini shes as th e you ng rider too k th ehol eshot a nd ra n u p a sizable lead a head of the pack of riders. Gene Kelley and J ason Bal as swapped second pl ace fini shes wit h Kell ey finishing seocnd overall wi th 3-2 mo to fims hes to Bal as' 2-3 tallies. Ken Frankenbery dom in at ed th e 250cc B class as th e Honda mounted rider led from start to fini sh to win moto o ne. J ohn Hill foll owed th e leader through the first fou r laps, th en dropped to third after bein g stung by a bee. Mike Cain moved into seco nd . Cai n grabbed th e holeshot to start the second mota wit h Frankenbery folloWing . Su zuki rider Matt Reed held thi rd whi le Honda-m o unted Tom T im chak mo tored into fou rt h. Cai n gave th e h a r d r idi ng Fran ken bery a run for first as the two riders were never ·more than two seco nds apart. Schwartz tops IMS Speedway By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 23> Bobby Sch wartz was in th e wi nner's circle after posting the victo ry in th e Cycle Rider, In c. Scrat ch main even t durin g KBON 103.9 FM 50s Night at Inl and Mot orcycle Speedway. It was amazing th at Wednesday evening's action got underway a t all. Less th an two hou rs before th e sta rt of th e sho w, a heavy 20-mi n ute, rain storm saturated the facility. The trac k, p its and parki ng lo ts were flooded but quick wo rk by the trac k st<\ff a nd the Fou r-Wh eeled ATV competito rs saved the show and th e first race of th e ni ght bu mped off a t the sched u led time. T he ra in pretty mu ch eliminated the o u tside line bu t that failed to bot her Schwartz as he outga ted th e pack in each of h is three Scra tch rides for wi ns. Schwartz had the pole for the main wit h "Showtime" Bobby Ott at hi s right elbow. England's Phil Co lli ns was starti ng in ga te three wi th Gary Hicks on the outside. When the tapes flew up o n th e rain-slickened oval, Schwartz came off the lin e like he was shot ou t of a ca nnon and led into th e first turn ahead of Ott and Collins. Hicks kn ifed his way between Co llins and Ott on th e back chute and settled into th e th ird place spot. -. O tt p ut his rear tire on th e cushion and that allowed him to close in on Schwartz and h is CTI Brace/ Silk olen e/Bud weiser/C ir ell o Racing / Oa kley Weslak e. J on Boyer, off th e short yardage, came off the line first ahea d of Randy Beddow but Gian etti gambled and went to the outs ide o n the back chu te and went by both of the m for the lead. G ianetti, o n th e Visio n's Graph ics Weslake, bu ilt up a good-sized lead but he had Bill y H amill powering hi s way throug h th e pack by th e end of th e second revolutio n . Brad Oxley, com ing from the back, passed Bo yer on lap five for thi rd and he, along with H amill , was slow ly closing in o n th e red-l ea th ered lead er. T he o nly problem was tim e. It wo uld ru n o ut before th ey co uld get close enough to mount a cha llenge. Wh en Sid Sutton threw the fina l H andica p main checkered of the seaso n it was Gi anetti chased across th e line by H amill and Oxley. Rod Sa unders found hi s way to th e IMS victory circle for th e second time of th e year in Support class actio n and the " Flying Chicano " T ony Gomez fou nd h is way there for the seco nd week in a row in T hi rd Division. . Brown easily wo n the Sen ior Mini and 125cc B classes, but J eff Shuler kept him hon est in the 250cc B class.
