Danny Sanchez took th e Vet Pro class titl e, and T erry Pratt took th e hon or s in the Vintage 40 class. In moto o ne of th e Women 's Expert class, Saint Racing's Shery l Fedorow led th e pack in to the first turn , o nly to hand Gonzal ez the lead when she came into the chica ne too ho t a nd stalled. T eam Gr een 's Gonzalez too k her AXO/ Scot tiMaxima/ DMC KX 125 into th e lead ahea d of T in a Clary and T am i Rice. Gonzalez ope ned up a lar ge lead wit h L i sa Pe ter son moving u p th rough the pack. Peterson closed the ga p on Rice and Rice was doi ng everything she co uld to keep Peterson behi nd her. After three lap s Peterson got around R ice and wasted no tim e in goi ng after T ara H arrison, wh o had moved tosecond, and closed in o n the sixth lap. Gonzal ez too k the checkered flag with H arrison fending off all attacks by Peterson with Rice a short distance back. Rounding out the top five was Bonnie Warch , wh o did an excellent job of holding off th e charges of Judy Sen delback. In moto two Clary came out of turn one leading Harrison , Rice, and Fedorow, while Gonzalez was back in fifth and charging hard. Fedorow was firs t to fall victim to Gonzalez an d Rice was next in lin e. Gonzal ez went by Rice in a sweepe r, but Rice q uickly repassed Gonzalez. H alf a la p lat er Gonzalez made her pass stick and within a lap wen t in to second behind Clary. H arrison stuc k . wi th Gonzalez and repassed, th en Gonzalez went down and was passed by both Rice and Peterso n. Up fro nt H arriso n had taken over first. Gonzalez was on the move, passin g Rice and Peterson to move into second. CZs dominat ed the Vintage 40+ class actio n with T erry Pratt on a 1974 CZ smo kin g the class with a pair of aces for the overa ll. Don Mitchell 's CZ claimed second and Gilles Vaillancourt claimed third overa ll. W.D. Samstag took his Greeves to fourth overa ll honors, and Jim Keeton rounded out th e top five aboard a '74 Husky. Wh en th e gate fell in mo to one of th e Vet Pro class Sanchez sho t into th e lead wi th Barry Porter and Ri ck Gr ant close behind. The onl y cha nge in th e top three position s happened wh en Porter was pa ssed by Grant. Moto two found th e same results as in moto one with Sanchez taking h ome the cash a nd G rant wi th second. Tripes scores win at Glen Helen MX By David Procida SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 20 Mike Tripes scored the overall victory in th e 125cc Intermediate class via a 1-2· score at round four of th e Western USA Championship Series hosted by CRC at Glen H elen OHV Park. • As the 125cc Intermediate cla ss headed' for the first turn Palmdale ' Honda's Tony Qualls ed~ed ahead of Tripes on a Pro-Circuit Honda, Chris Trickle and Yamaha pilot Mike Ch amberlain. Qualls bobbled in a corne r, allo wing th e pack to close in o n h im . Tripes was on th e gas and passed Quall s wi th Sp ike Racing's J eff Barb acovi clos ing fast o n bo th riders. T ripes pulled away from Quall s as Barbacovi closed in th en dove under arid pas t Qualls. Chamb erlain closed in o n T ric kle and passed h im to take fourt h behind Q ualls. O ut front Tripes was holding off the charges of Barbacovi, wh o had his hands fu ll with Quall s. At the checkered flag it was T ri pes wirh the wi n follo wed by Barb aco vi , T ric kle and Ch amb erl ain . In moto two Tripes pi cked up where he left off and led Wisem an and T rickle. On lap three Chamberlai n closed in on Trickle and th e two diced heavil y for a cou p le o f laps before T ric kle cou ld open up a little breathi ng roo m o n Ch amberlain . T ri pes had o pened up a 14 second lead o n Wisem an o n ly to h a ve Wisem an close it up and go by for the lead o n lap six. Trickle and Ch amberl ain closed in o n the leaders a nd stuffed Tripes th en found a fast line o n th e in sid e to p ow er by Wiseman and into th e lead. T rickl e was the first rider pa st th e checkered but Tripes had go tten by Wisem an and secure d the overall with a 1-2 to tal. Bloliiarz wins Coal Valley Trials By Paul Hayes COAL VAL L EY, IL , SEPT. 20 Stan Bloniarz, riding in th e Junior class, clai med th e overall win at the Tri-Ci ty sponsored trial s. H is first loop score of 13 carried him to th e win. The event was ro und nine of th e -AMA/Di strict 17 sa nc tio ne d series. Bloniarz, spo nso red by Imperial Service System s and Honda of Des Pl aines, ro de th e three loop, 10 section ra ce and posted a 47. Second place went to J im Emmersson . He carded a 54 o n a Fantic, Emmersson 's first loop score of 23 hurt hi s chance for the overall since he tallied a low 16 and 15 during the last two loops. Durk Roper rounded out the top three with a score of 64 aboard a Yamaha. The Novice class went to Randall Jones with a final score of 61. Jones dropped 29 points in the first loop, then posted an 18 and 14. His winning machine was a Yamaha. Honda-mounted John Skwatch dabbed h is way into second place with a total of 70. J oel Ripper came in two points behind to finish the day wi th a 72. Ripper was on a n SWM. Bill McCull ou gh to pped th e Enduro class. H e had 15 clea ns and ca rded a 64. H onda r ider Ri ck J ohnson had th e lowest loop score of 17, but his o ther loops were 30 a n d 24. T he Di stri ct 17 T r ial s Director Paul Hayes fin ished th ird aboard a Yam aha wit h 86 poi nts . Only two Experts showed u p ' Ito do battle. In th e end it was the Imperial Service Systems/ Ho nda of Des Plain es, bike o f Zb ign ei w J ed ynak on top. Zigi is current ly leading the District 17 po int sta ndings in th e Expert class. Hummels pummel Baylands MX By Mike Vanc il FREMONT, CA, SEPT. 18 The older and younger versions of th e Hummel Racing T eam made a somewhat rare appearance at Baylands Raceway Park and walked away with a first and second overall for th eir efforts in tonight's MX competition. In thefirst I25cc Junior class moto it was th e yo unger of the pair, T yler Hummel, aboard a Suzuki, who nabbed th e holeshot, but he faded by mid-moto to th ird pl ace. In th e second moto Hummel rod e a more inspired race and brought th e RM in for second behind doub lemoto winner Chris Stille o n his CR Honda. Hummel was able to grab second ov erall du e to ' h is 3-2 performance. Older brother Sean Hummel was a bit more forceful. He parlayed first and second in h is two motos into an overall win in th e Junior Open cla ss. The first moto saw Hummel get into an immedi at e see-saw battle with H onda-mounted T ed Pippin, and Hummel came out on top. In th e seco nd rnoto, Hummel spent too much time co nce rn ed about wh ere Pippin was and all owed a double-m oto victory to escape him . H e kept just ahead of Pippin, no t concen tra ting on an ything else, and fini sh ed seco nd to Gar y Pl aatj e, a boa rd a Yam aha.
