AMAjNATC National ObselYed Trials Series: Round 9 Schrieber wins Port Huron Trials By Michael Beavdoin PORT H URON , Ml , SEPT. 6 T he Michigan/Ontario Trials Associ ati on o rga n ized th e n inth and fin al ro und of th e National Trial s Series at Port 38 Huron , an d it was a battl e to th e fini sh between Pennsylvania' s Ryan Young, Swedis h champ ion J on ny Andersson a nd World Cha mp io n Bernie Sch reiber. The Michigan Nat ion al was very demanding. It consisted of two 10m ile loops and 20 ' sectio ns . The sections consisted largely of steep uphills and 'down hills, and ro ck gulleys. wit h almos t vertical walls, that were th e on ly way o ut. It was apparent from th e start that the tim e limit was going to be tight. No cham pio n sh ip riders 'esca ped pena l ty poi nts. · On th e first lap it was a waiting ga me to see wh o would go first and which lines they would take. A few cha mpionshi p riders took their five points wi th o ut attemp ti ng the tougher sectio ns. After th e first lap, Schreib er led wi thj us t 10 points. Ryan Young was close o n hi s heels with II points and Jonny And ersson foll owed with 16 points. J ack Stites, with 29, and Ron Cornrno J r. with 35, rounded ou t th e top five. The second loop was a race back to the' pits to beat the penalty points. Schreiber rai sed his score of 18 to the second loop for a total of 28, and with th e addi tio n of 7.8 penalty points he ended up with 35.8 points to take first pl ace. Ryan Young finished second with a 23 on th e seco nd loop and an additional 3.4 penalty points brought his total to 42.4 Jonny Anderssson dropped 19 points on the second loop. A bad break in section 12, which he cleaned 'the first tim e through, gave him a five on th e second loop and cost him second place. ' He finished with 35 points, and 9.8 penalty points for being late, taking third place with 44.8. Florida 's Jack Stites, Yamahamounted, was fourth with 74.8. and Gl enn McNea l from Alaba ma finished fifth wi th 82.2. In th e Spo rtsma n 's class , Step hen Dolm from Pennsylvan ia took first place 'w ith a 63.2, wh ile Todd Co ffey was a close seco nd with 63.8. J eff Kingsford had a lower score , but six pena lty' points gave h im a 67 for thi rd. T he Vetera n class fini sh was very close. Pat e Keen , on e of o nly two rid ers who had no pena lty poi nts for th e day, too k first wi th 135. Second was cla imed by Don ald Wilcox wi th a 136.4 and Bill Wachendor fer too k third wi th 147.2. J am es Fox from Pennsylvan ia _topped th e Sen ior class with 98 points, beating top Michigan riders Greg Krist (10% for second) and Bob Capistra n t (third with 11 6.4). Faria claims California spdwy title By Scott Daloisio SAN 'BERNARDI NO , CA, Sep t. 26 "Flyin' Mike" Faria beat th e odds, as well as 15 other riders, to take th e 20th Annual Budweiser/KOLA 99.9 FM California State Championship at John LaDouceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway. It was th e first win by Faria in America's seco nd most prestigious speedway race even though he has competed in the event for th e pa st 10 seasons. Faria ' notorious bad lu ck, which has surfaced every tim e a major title has been within his grasp, failed to rear its ugly head on th e night. The familiar broken chain, flat tire or broken rod were not a part of Faria's repertoire during his five races. Bobby Schwartz , 1984 State Cham, pio n and win ner of 55 main s in 1987, was th e favorite comi ng in. He then drew the number nne spo t in the field whi ch meant th at he wo uld start off the pol e in his first and last rides. Needless to say, h is stock rose even h igh er. Schwa rtz came o ut strong and o utdista nced Dubb Ferrell for th e win in event o ne but sur prisi ngly, it proved to be,his last hurrah of the night. Bobb y O tt, th e defendin g Sta te Cha mpion, was taken wide by Steve Lucero as they came off turn two o n th e openi ng lap of the second heat. Ott was forced to back off and found himself in th e fourth spot. H e picked up o ne pos itio n wh en Lu cero fell in the next bend and wh en Bart Bast went wide lat e in th e race, Ott strea ked under him to take second behind Gary Hi cks. Alan Christian fou gh t back th e challen$es of "Rad " Brad Oxley th e ent ire di stan ce to win heat four while Shawn Moran becam e- th e onl y.rider to defeat Fari a in heat fou r. Far ia had a poor gate but he ended up com ing from th e back to take second. T he mat ch-u p betw een Faria and Sch wartz opened the second round and the y stage d a classic du el o n th e first lap. Fari a was down low with Sc h wa rtz o n the o utsi de . Even th ough he did a sma ll wh eelie off turn two, Fari a kep t hi s mom entum up a nd he too k the lead for good at th e end of th e first circu it. Fariaran awa y for th e win and hi s dri ve to th e state cha mpio nshi p was o n. Sha wn Moran easily won the reru n of event six. The race had to be restarted after Bast went down hard on th e o pening lap. He was unable to restart. Ferrell pl aced second to Mora n a nd had four points after two o ut ings. H eat seven went to Oxley over Lu cero and Kell y Moran with Ott easi ly ta king heat eigh t, After two rounds Shawn Moran had the lead with six points but Fari a, Schwartz , Oxley and Ott were lu rking o ne point back. Christian a nd Ferrell were o nly two points behind. Oxl ey , o ff of gate four , and Schwartz had a great ra ce in heat nine. Schwartz got the gate and when Oxl ey tried to go around on the outside. he pinched him against the wall at th e end of the opening lap. One lap la ter Oxley took the lead and went on for the win. Ott faced off aga ins t Rob Pfetzing and the brothers Moran in heat 12. Ott was off the pole while the Morans were out of three and four. Ott took the lead on the back chute on lap one and ran away for his secondwin in three outings. .. Kell y Moran pu lled fro m the even t after heat II wh en his bike gave up th e ghos t with a brok en rocker ar m. The th ird ro und ended with a tapeto-checkered win by Fari a and a log ja m at th e head of th e point sta nd, in gs. Faria, O tt, Oxley and Sha wn Moran were a ll tied for first With eig ht points. Schwa rtz was still in th e hunt w ith seven but thing s changed quickly wh en ro und four opened. Lu cero wo n heat 13 ahead of Bill y H am ill. T h ird spot went to Schwa rtz whil e Shaw n Mo ran fini sh ed ' a dis ta nt fourth. In less th an o ne minute, Schw artz and Moran had seen th eir title asp ira tio ns totally wi ped o ut. H eat 14 mat ched Fari a, Ott and Oxley, all tied for th e po int positi on , w ith Ferr ell. T his ra ce had th e potential to decide the cham pionsh ip . Faria , off two, gated with Ott just behind. Oxley a lmos t went down tryin g to avoid Ferrell and found himself in last. Ott came down to the in side and th e race was on. Fari a bounced around on th e edge of th e cush io n but he maintain ed a slim lead. Every time Faria would bobble, Ott would pi ck up a little bit of ground but he never gained enough to pull alongside the northern Cal ifornia nativ e. On th e last lap Ott went wide but it didn 't work. Oxley ca me hom e last a n d hi s chances of wi nni ng were gon e. Ott opened th e fin al rou nd when he defeat ed Schwa rtz. They had a goo d battle at the o utset but Ott then ran awa y a nd took th e win Ott did a ll he co u ld and th e meeting was no t o ut of his hands. H e had to stand and wait to see wh at Far ia would do in heat 19. Lu cero : 1985 Stat e Ch ampion, won heat 18 and then heat 19 roll ed onto the track. Faria took th e lead from tli e tapes. The laps clicked off and there was not a problem in sight. Faria took th e white flag with the lead and the fans all came to th eir feet.
