Williams takes win at Seattle RR By Bruce Schulten 46 SEA1TLE, WA, SE PT. 13 T erry Williams surp rised himself a nd every body else by winnin g th e featured Seattle Cycle Center 600 Superbike Shoot-O u t on a Yamaha FZ600 a t Seattl e International Raceway. H e used it to go od adva n tage, a n d led th e 10 lap ra ce right fr om th e st art. McDo nald tri ed passing Williams in turn three, but got into a maj or slide. H e managed not to fall, but Wasch er , ca ndida te for th e seaso n class cha m p ionsh ip, wasn 't as lucky. Wascher fell in th e bushes, but go t up a nd reentered the race. McDona ld refused to let Williams off th e hook. On lap six h e dr aft ed h is H urri cane. past Williams , but cou ldn't make it stic k. His lin e into turn two was too wide, and Wi lliams grabbed the lead righ t back. "T h e deciding moment probab ly came on lap eight when I set Shawn up with a couple of ba ck markers,.. said Williams after the ra ce. The two leaders encou ntered a group ofthem in turn nine. Williams got off the gas and sq ua red off th e co rner, passing them o n th e inside. But McDonald's attempt at an o u tside pass was blocked , a nd he lo st se ver a l bike lengths. Williams ' Mi chelin -shod Suzuki /Y amaha Northwest FZ600 was fir st to the wire, ahead of McDona ld , Lynnwood Cycle Barn 's Scott McMillan, Lynnwood Yamaha 's Steve Schaefer, and Greg Froberg's NES RA EX500. Froberg perform ed yeoman duty in his campaign to bea t joe P it tman for th e WM RRA n umber one plate. Safreed tops Ohio State MX C'ship By Drew Wolfe NELSONVILLE, OH, SE PT. 19-20 Yamaha-mounted Mark Sa freed won two o f th e three mot os to tak e th e o vera ll 250cc Pro h onors in th e Acti on Sports-h osted , Ohio Sta te MX Ch ampionship. . The two-day even t, which is a n a n n ua l AMA District II a nd District 12 challenge, co nsisted o f two heats o f su pe rcro ss ra cing o n Sa tu rday night and one h eat of mot oc ros s racing on Sunday. Blair kept h im at bay, ta ki ng the wi n by a wheel. Third went to Smi th and an inj ured Musselman took fourth . The gate dro p ped in rno to two with Kawasaki rider Roger Clause railing the first turn with the lead. Safreed, Bla ir and Musselman fol lowed. Safreed quickly passed Clause for the lead and n ever loo ked back. Clause was p icked off one- by-one by Bla ir , and Musselman and finished Iourt h with Blai r seco nd, and Musselman third. Paladino romps at BaylandsMX By Mike Vancil FREMO NT, CA, SE PT. 16 Dann y P al adi n o took his l 25cc H onda to an overall victory in the Open Pro class in th e weekly motocross at Baylands Ra ceway Park. The other three competitors in th e class were aboard large-bore machines. In th e first moto, Pal adin o co u ld far e no better than second at the ch ec ker s be hind wi nner Clayton Blood and h is Kawasaki. Pa ladin o wa s up and down through th e ranks like a yo-yo; he held every position in th e lour-man ra ce, an d hi s problems ranged from mi ssed sh ifts to misjudged corners. In th e second mo to , Blood crashed hard and did not finish . At the start of th e seco nd rnoto, H onda -m ou nted Craig Porter got the holeshot, but by th e second lap Pa lad in o h ad figured ou t how to quit making errors. Pal adin o q ui ckly moved by Porter to tak e over the lead. Late in th e rno to , Bru ce Ma nzo ni go t by Por ter.
