Brown, Yarrow take Winterset MX wins By Sharon Jones WINTERSET, lA, SE PT. 13 Dave Bro wn took the overall victory in the 250cc B class whi le R ick Yarr ow won the 250cc A class honors today at th e Shady H ill s id e mo tocross. The 250cc A a nd B classes were combined and A rider J eff Ferrin took a bi g holeshot in moto o ne. B rid er Da ve Bro wn IPlve Chase with Bria n Lackey hol dmg down third. A ri der Yarrow was back a bit o n the sta rt, but was quickl y surfacing as a front runner. Yarrow nailed Lackey on a hairpin and moved in on Brown. On the last lap, Yarrow slipped past Brown on the doubles but wa s a few bike lengths short of catching Ferrin. In rnoto two Brown took a clean holeshot but stalled his motor on th e big o ff cam ber downhill, letting half the pack by before restarting. Yarrow and Ferrin took over the front spots for a good battle. Meanwhile Brown was £lying around th e track, passing riders each lap. Lackey was ahead of Brown by severa l seconds, but Brown whittled away a nd caught Lackey with two laps to go. Brown made his move, passing Lackey and taking th e B class win. In the Over 25 class, Brad Jones took the holeshot with J im Velk in second. Brown ran th ird, but stalled his engine. KTM-mounted Ray Waddell took over third and Yarrow ran fourth. Jones pulled away a bit while Waddell and Yarrow pushed Velk. Yarrow passed Waddell but Velk held on for second. In moto two Jones got the holeshot again but got sideways coming out of tu rn one. Velk and Jones jammed bars while Greg Poots hauled around the outside to take the lead. Jones got by Velk in turn two and passed Poots over th e finish line jump on lap two. Jones started to pull away while Velk and Yarrow chased Poots, Yarrow passed Velk on the last lap which gave Yarrow second overall behind Jones. Velk took third overall with a 2-4 finish . In the 125cc B class Jim Krus e took a n early lead right off th e star ting grid. Before' the end of lap one, how ever, Kirk ThieIch sailed past for a co m mandi ng lead a nd the win. Kru se held on to seco nd ahead of J ay H arder. Kruse headed the pack aga in in mo ta two a nd again ThieIch rocketed into the lead befor e th e end of lap one. Kruse lost control in a turn a nd let R ick Spencer by for seco nd. H arder a lmost got by Kru se b u t Kru se regai ned control in time to hold onto third p lace, good en o ugh for seco nd overall behind ThieIch . Singleton, a 200cc Expert rider, edged ou t AA Class wi n ner J eff Plunkett by 29 seconds for th e overall win. KTM-mounted Plunkett holds a strong AA points lead in the series. Open Ex pert class winner Kelly Crenshaw fini shed thi rd o verall aboard his Yamaha. . Honda-mounted John DeLee top ped the 250cc Novice class, turning the fastest novice time for the overall Novice award: DeLee also holds his class lea d in the seri es. The Louisiana Trail Riders Associa tio n ran the Expert classes five laps aro u nd the nine mile co u rse. Novice riders ran four laps while the Beginners ran three. Rain the day before left the co urse in good condition with several mudholes to make things interesting. Women 's class winner, Alana Richardson, commented after she crossed the finish line, " I got stuck in a mudhole and they just used my motorcycle for traction. Then one ~y picks my bike up and throws It into the trees to get me out o f the wa y. " Richardson went on to fin ish on her KDX80 and take first place.
