The fastest time at the night hillclimb came in the Open class. Mike Schobert went through the timing lights in 2.99 seconds and was the only rider to break into the three second bracket. Wi a ~ Results Peter Malyj (32) and Scott Mathews (831) lead the field of 125cc Amateurs through the first turn at Hunt. Mathews .took.the overall victory and Malyj finished second. A lap later Barnett was back in third when Wheeler stalled his bike and he slipped passed Sellards. Chuck Nicholson took over fourth when both Wheeler and Sellards fell. Maurer held a two second lead on Spangler as the two headed toward the checkered flag, but the victory slipped away as Maurer's engine seized .with less than a half of a lap t6 go. Spangler took the win followed by Maurer, Barnett and Nicholson. Barnett was out front again as the gate dropped to start moto two leaving Spangler, Sellards, Steve Gardiner and Nicholson in pursuit. The Team Green/Smith Goggles/ Wiseco/Tuf Racing Prod.-backed Spangler routed ahead of Barnett to begin the second lap with Sellards also going by Barnett. Nicholson moved around Gardiner who dropped out a lap later with a broken sprocket. Spangler took the win with Sellards, Barnett and Nicholson following. . Suzuki-rider Mike Boggia followed Spangler throughout the first moto of the 250cc A class. Spangler held a better than eight second lead at the end of the nine-lap moto. Paul Knapp held third for four laps until Yamaha-mounted John Die.zic passed him to take third. When the' gate' dropped for the start of the second mota, Bo~gia (J.B. Race Prod., Maxima, Fam~ly Kaw.) was in the lead with Spangler and Maurer trailing. Boggia managed to hold Spangler off for one lap before being passed,' then Maurer went by a lap later. Gary Bruce and Dale Taylor moved into third and fourth when Boggia faded to midpack. Lucas _Woolridge take 1 Hunt IffJC wins By Michael Harasmiz HUNT, NY, AUG. 30 Bart Lucas took convincing 1-1 moto scores in the Senior A division, while Jimmy Woolridge took a 2-2 overall win in the highly competitive 250cc Expert class today at the Hunt Motocross. Lucas pulled the holeshot in the first Senior A moto only to be passed by Kawasaki-mounted Cliff Miller. Miller opened up a seven-second lead on Lucas, out by the fourth lap Lucas began finding his rhythm and started reeling in Miller. Lucas finally took over the lead at the end of a long straight and took the win with Miller and Brian Broadwell finishing second and third. Grabbing the lead in the second Senior A moto was Lucas with Miller and Perry Brandon close behind. Lucas opened up a sizeable lead with Brandon and Miller battling over second. Lucas took the win with Miller second and Brandon in third. Heading the pack in the first 250cc Expert moto was Joe ElIin~ton and Pete Phillips, with Woolndge and Troy Bradshaw close behind. Ellington and Woolridge began a moto long battle for the lead as Philips settled into third. With one lap to go Ellington was passed by Woolridge, then returned the fav.or wi th a surprise pass on Woolridge with two comers to go and took the win. Woolridge was second with Phillips third and'Bradshaw fourth. Taking the holeshot in the second 250cc Expert moto was Woolridge with Phillips, Steve Hess and Mark Buscher close behind. Woolridge, Hess'and Buscher argued over first with Buscher eventually picking off Hess and Woolridge to move into the lead. At the flag it was Team Green/ Silkolene/ Answer-sponsored Buscher taking the win with Woolridge second and Hess finishing third. Woolridge's 2-2 moto score took the overall while Buscher's 6- . Scott tops two at White City HC By Paul Hayes WHITE CITY, IL, AUG. 22 Ed Scott rode to wins in the 125 and 200cc classes today at the White City Hillclimb. His best rides came in the second rounds. The event was part 'of the AMA D-17 Hillclimb Series and sponsored by the Mid-State 'Dirt Riders. Scott earned his first win in the 125cc class. He rode his Kawtown Kawasaki/Beta-sponsored' Kawasaki over the 110 foot hill in 4.51 seconds. Honda-moun'ted Ken Matway climbed the hill in 4.79 seconds to finish second. Andy Schum went 100 feet on his first ride for third place. The Kawasaki of Sco~t's won the 200cc class with a 3.88 second run. Sam Blakeney, riding for Pro Tech, had a better second ride at 3.96 seconds to settle for the runner-up position. Mike Parnell stopped the timer at 4.29 for third. Jim Steffey was also a double winner when he scored victories in the 500 and 750cc classes. Steffey's final ride in the 500cc class was 3.14 and the winning machine was a Honda. Kawtown Kawasaki/Beta Shop rider Ron Todd had a 3.21 second climb on a Kawasaki to earn second overall. Bill Steffey used his last ride, which ·carried him over in . 3.34 seconds, to finish third. Jim Steffey rode his Kawasaki triple to first place in the 750t:c class. He only needed hisfirsnide of 3.41 to secure the win. Chuck Seldal, also on a Kawasaki triple, used his second climb of 3.63 to finish second. Rounding out the top three waS Yamaha rider Roger Hackbarth. His last attempt was 3.77. MINI: 1. Bradshaw blasts Secession atJC By Gary Crider ANDERSON, SC, AUG. 30 Yamaha's Damon Bradshaw won both 250cc Pro motos and was runner-up both times in 125cc action to earn the ·Iion's share of the $5000 Pro purse at Secession MX. The unusually large purse attracted Pro riders from seven states. Freewheeling Honda's Sean Dukes we~t past leader Bradshaw to win both times in 125cc Pro action. Bradshaw, complaining of front brake problems, had to settle for a pair of seconds. Kenny Kizzar was in the hunt in moto one and took the lead away from Bradshaw on the . third lap only to trash over the tunnel-jump a half-lap later. Kizzar's Yamaha's gas tank was damaged and he DNF. Jeff Glass put his Surf. Laundr,y Detergent-backed Honda into the third overall slot via 5,3 finishes. En route to his pair of 250cc Pro moto wins Bradshaw had to contend with intense pressure both times out from Kevin Foley aboard his MidSouth Honda/Fox-backed machine. Dukes edged Robbie Taylor for third overall honors in a tied score. Taylor, fresh from his Open A win at. Loretta Lynn's,. dominated. the 5'00cc .Pro class with a pair of runaway wins aboard his Scott/Belli Gear-backed, Mike Callahan-tuned Yamaha. Earl May and Joe Rogers had a day-long war for runner-up honors. MaJ( came out on top after fighting his way past Rogers late in the final moto. One of the highlights in Amateur action came in the second 250cc B moto as Tony Lee survived challenges on every lap from Keith Brady. Lee held on for the win over Brady. Lee's first moto win had come easier as he established a go~ lead while Brady had to work through traffic to a second place finish. William Mutimer claimed the l25cc B honors after winning both motos over runner-up Jake McClure and third overall Chris Tucker. Tommy Bilz was fourth..
