Kawasaki-mounted Tyson Vohland of California topped all comers during MTGP Ultracross action, held in Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Yamaha rider Doug Dubach collected 23 points to finish second, only two points off Vohland's winning tally of 26 points. UItracross By Jim Smith Photos by Beverly Gossman LOS ANGELES, CA, JULY 25 Kawasaki rider Tyson Vohland, from Sacramento, California, captured top honors inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum after beating Yamaha rider Doug Dubach and Honda-mounted Jon Nelson at the MTGP Ultracross. Vohland spon. ' sored by AraI Helmets, Scott 22 USA and Hi-Point, collected 25 points, edging Dubach's 23-point tally. Tonight's 250cc Ultracross consisted of two heats, 16 riders each, with the top 10 finishers of each qualifying for the main. The fastest qualifying times went to Vohland on his Team Green Kawasaki, Dubach, Jeff Matiasevich on a Kawasaki, and SCOll Burnworth riding a Honda. These riders were awarded points toward the Uhracross Series Championship. In heat one the riders lined up on the half-mile-type turn, running the course in the opposite direction as the cars, ATVs, buggies, trucks, wheelbarrows, etc. Shaun Wooten got through the first run ahead of everybody else, followed by Hondamo~nted.GarySemics, V~hland and Mauasevlch. Marty Smith worked his way up through the traffic, and by the third lap it was Wooten, Vohland, Smith and Matiasevich, with Semics dropping to fifth. It was fairly close, with the second through fifth positions changing every lap. The finish was Wooten, Matiasevich, Smith, Vohland and Semics. Heat two Was a real thriller, especially for those in the crowd who liad never seen a motocross before. Dubach quickly got the lead in the first half of. lap one, but the real crowd pleaser in this race was Burnworth, as he chewed his way back from a bad start to capture second place.
