National ...........pionship· Motorcycle Races" , Kuntz clobbers Glen HelenMX By Terry Whytal SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY 26 Suzuki o[ Riverside pilot Jim Kuntz powered to an overwhelming win in the 250cc Intermediate race at this week's SMX event at Glen Helen. Except [or a first moto holeshot by Honda rider UIE Johansson, Kuntz was not headed throughout the two motos and opened a commanding lead in eacl1 round. Johnsson finished in the number two slot in the first moto bu t dropped to third overall as Suzuki-mounted Jon Friesen edged him to third in the second moto. In the Pro class, Brian Vargus danced his Suzuki to the win over Scott Haydis on a Honda. Haydis reached the checkers first in the opening moto but Vargus cl1arged back to take the second moto and the overall win. In other amateur action, Tony Qualls took top honors in the 125cc Novice class on his Honda. The youns Lancaster resident bested the field In both motos despite a strong second moto challenge [rom Suzuki pilot Brian Hicks. Hicks finished with a 4-2 score that was good enough [or second overall with Marc Matson rounding out the top three. The Vet Novice race featured the double moto wins o[ Elliott Iverson. Yamaha-mounted Iverson was challenged by Honda rider Louis Springer in the first moto and Suzuki pilot Sam Lupear in the second. The overall win was Iverson's with Springer having to settle for runnerup honors as Lupear placed third. Yamaha rider Kevin Mehlbrecht handled the 250cc Beginner challenge with back-to-back wins. The La Habra Yamaha-sponsored rider displayed a command o[ the tricky Glen Helen course that allowed him to stretch .his lead over the class in each round. Chasing Mehlorecl1t to the checkers in each moto was Yamaha pilot Craig Carlson with Gary Hollon working his way to third overall on a Suzuki. Results PRo: 1. Brien Vorgus (Suz); 2.
