Kawasaki rider Jeff Matiasevich was one of four fast qualifiers. was able to stay with Dubach on the big jumps. He consistently sailed a good five feet higher over the heads of the others o££ the back straight. The second heat finished with Dubach, followed by. Burnworth, Mike Kiedrowski on a Kawasaki, Eddie Hicks, Kawasaki, and in fifth, Rex Staten, riding a Yamaha. In the main, with 'a reverse order start for the first six positions, Jon Ortner, out of Carpinteria, California, riding a Honda got the holeshot followed by Russ Wageman' (Yamaha), Nelson, Jeff Mabery (Yamaha), Vohland and Dubach. By the end of lap three the order was Wageman, Ortner, Nelson, Vohland and Dubach. Vohland and Dubach got around Mabery, Nelson and Ortner, and finally caught Wageman, who by this time had stretched out a pretty good-sized lead. These guys were so evenly matched, not to mention close, that it was inevitable that one or the other would go down. The inevitable happened on lap four when Wageman and Dubach embraced handlebars going throug,h "Lovers' Lane," an over-under section at the base of the peristyle jump. Wageman couldn't get his bike started fast enough, and dropped back towards the back of the pack. Vohland now had a pretty fairsized lead, and Dubach was .able to get going quickly enough to keep second place. Dubach really thrilled everyone with his effort to catch up, going even higher o££ the jumps than ·before. It was about this time that Burnworth gave everyone heart palpitations by looping over backward on the big jump on. the front straightaway. • Results MAIN: 1. Tyson Vohland (Kaw); 2.
