RICHMOND, VA, JULY I
The Virginia State Fairground's
weekly short track races had an
invasion of riders from Maryland
and Delaware to ·take on the local
competition. Ray West, going for his
fourth track title, showed good form
throughout tbe evening's program,
and took the 250cc main win.
West rode his Kawasaki to the
front position in the first 250cc
qualifier, and stayed there the distance. Jay Williams, recovering from
a leg injury, rode his Honda hard
in challenging, but he had a stiff
tussle with uzuki rider Bill Chalkley. The second 250cc heat was just
about a carbon copy of the first. The
exception was Maryland rider Guy
Stuart, racing a Bultaco, got into a
real skirmish for third, closing a
bike length behind Chalkley at the
finish line. The main event had West
get off first. Jay Williams and
Chalkley stayed tied with the leader
until the halfway mark was passed.
Then West appeared to get a second
wind and bolt away finishing a good
five bike lengths in front. Williams
and Chalkley foHowed.
West came back strong in the 500cc
class. Maryland rider Ray Collings,
on a Harley, tried to give West a run
in the first heat, but West pulled
away to add another victory to .his
already impressive night. Chris
Rickman had been another casualty
in early season racing. He was healed
and ready to go, but his bike
wouldn't cooperate, making him
miss the first heat. He borrowed
fellow racer, Glenn Baar's, Kawasaki
for the second heat.
On the start West jumped and the
race was red flagged and then restarted. Rickman took the lead with
West working his way through the
pack. On the fourth circuit West
caught up and went by. On the last
lap, Rickman made an inside pass
off turn two work for the victory.

Plessinger Score at

By Roy Garrett
COLUMBUS, IN, JU E 28
Scott Plessinger grabbed the overall
victory at the Stoneylonesome M.C.'s
hare scramble in Columbus. Plessinger rode his 250cc machine around
the four-mile course consisting of
hills, creeks and tree with almost no
problems to edge out Kurt Hough
for the win.
Plessinger grabbed the lead before
the first check and held it the rest
of the way. Randy Stephenson hung
on to the hard-charging Plessinger
early, but fell off the pace, letting
Hougb move into contention.
Hough caught Pies inger on the
fourth lap and both riders battled for
the rest of the race, until Hough
crashed on the final lap.
When Hough crashed, it allowed Plessinger a little breathing room
and he went on to win by a little
over 30 seconds. In the 250cc class
Plessinger, Hough and Stephenson
lapped all of the riders in the field
except Greg Humphrey and Mike
Forney, who finished first and
second, respectively, in the Open
class.

DELTA, OH, JUNE 27
Senior rider Tom Jankowski blasted
hi Yamaha past the pack to win the
second moLO of the afternoon at the
Glass City Motosport Park. This
vi CLOry, combined with his earlier
second place finish assured him of
the overall trophy.
The evening classes were run
under perfect conditions. The 125
and 250cc A action delivered a classic
confrontation between Hondaarmed Mark Beamer and Kawasakimounted Jay Wentzel. The first moto
of the 125cc class saw Wentzel nail
the holeshot. A first lap miscalculation however, not only cost Wentzel the lead, but dropped him back .
into the pack as Bill Robinson, Steve
Robinson and Mark Beamer flew by.
Bill Robinson's lead was short-lived,
as Beamer £logged his Honda into
first place. Steve Robinson bulled h_is
Kawasaki into second and set his
sights on the leader. Beamer rooe
consistently until he got sideways in
a series of whoops and allowed Steve
Robinson to pull even'. The two
determined riders diced their way to
the checkered £lag with Beamer
inching out the win. Steve Robinson
was right on his fender; with Bill
Robinson claiming third. Wentzel
had regrouped enough to take fourth
ahead of KTM rider Terry Ramsey.
MOLO two of the 125cc competition, once again, saw Wentzel power
to the first turn with the lead, only
this time the EP Performance and
Michner Industries-sponsored rider
refused to falter. Beamer dogged but
Wentzel found the good lines, rode
consistently and took the checkered
£lag. Beamer, who was snapping at
Wentzel's rear tire to the bitter end,
garnered second, followed by Steve
Robinson, Terry Ramsey and Bill
Robinson. Beamer's 1-2 finish gave
him the overall win.
Beamer had the upper hand in the
250 class as he had outdistanced his
rivals LO take a first moto victory;
Wentzel took second.
It boiled down to a Beamer/
Wentzel face-off in the last moto.
Wentzel rocketed to turn one in front·
with Beamer in hot pursuit. For three
laps the two fighters battled before
Wentzel started to put some distance
between them. Beamer began to fade,
and by lap four, he was in a dogfight for second with James
Schroeder and Chuck Loy. When the
white £lag came out, Wentzel had a
30 yard lead and Beamer had his
hands full holding on to second. On
the last lap, fighting to maintain his
position, Beamer went down. Wentzel took the win, and the overall.
James Schroeder (third overall),
Chuck Loy (second overall), Michael
. Schroder and Steve Robinson
rounded out tbe top five, while
Beamer had fallen to ninth.
