By race tim e, th e ear ly morn in g drizzle had becom e a steady downpour as J ones grabbed th e lead a t th e sta rt of the first 125cc A class mo ta , foll owed by J ohn McDi vitt, Barney Barnett a nd Steve Gardin er. T he four rid ers held their po sit ions through o ut th e eight-lap rn oto as J on es ran up a 27-second lead a nd then too k the class wi n. Seven rid ers had signed up for th e 250cc/Ope n A class, but a t th e start of the first mota , a n iy four bik es a ppeared a t the line. Once agai n, it was J on es o ut front in the first turn a nd he rem ained th ere for th e ent ire race, running u p a sizeable lead over second pl ace fin ish er Craig Ma rtin. Terry Deliman was the wi nner in the 250cc B class. Del irnan had h is work cut out fo r h im as the Hondamounted rider had to start backwards after he j umped the ga te a nd a fal se start was called. Chris Kriebel took th e ea rly lead on th e restart followed by Rick Boepple a nd Bria n Doran . Within the first lap, Deliman was in secon d pl ace, hav ing p icked .o ff riders through ever turn . H alf way through the mot a , Delim an was in total control. After passi ng Kriebel , Deliman built lip a six-seco nd lead as Doran pressu r ed Kri eb el fo r second, a battle Doran won on the final lap. The Senior I class was a battle to see who co uld stay on two whee ls. Robbins nips McMurter at Shannonville RR By Jeremy Fleming SHA N NO NVIL L E, ONT, CAN ADA, MAY 3 Art Robbins gave th e new Canadian Rothmans Honda Superbike Team a winning debut by beating Rueben McMurter'sl'amaha by in ch es in the Pro 750cc Su perbike feature of th e McBride Cycle Cup, th e open ing even t of th e nine-race Motoplan/ Castrol East ern Canada Challenge Series held a t Sh annon vill e. McMurter' s Yamaha FZR750R, running a new style motor in place of the engine tha t put " the Rueb" o ut of the Match Races in England, was a rocket a nd none of the others cou ld keep up on Shannonville's new back straight. A heat race victory co nfirmed th e machine's sp eed, and McMurter dul y got th e lead a t the start of the final. But Robbins was hungry, even thou gh his new Rothmans, North Amer ican . Va n Lin es/Castra l! T ree n /S hoe i / M i ch el in / Sh ellbac ked Intercept or was getting its first run. Built in U.S. HRC headquarters by Leimer and Bush Engineering along with th e machine of tea mm a te Paul Ma cMillan , . the VFRs bristl ed with tri ck parts but were sho rt o n development time. The handling was sorted by Sunday, but more motor wo uld hav e to wai t. Ev en so, R obbin s pushed by McMurter go ing into th e tricky, decreasing radius double a pex turn four o n lap one, a nd th e leading pair ra n way wide. Former ' Canadian cha m p MacMillan dove for the in sid e, but th e McMurter/Robbins pair sq uared off the turn leaving MacMillan nowh ere to go. MacMillan tried th e front brake, washed out, a nd slid to a sto p unhurt. The lead ing pair used MacMillan 's misfortune to break away from the pack. Robbins got by McMurter a co u p le o f tim es. but McMu r te r wo u ld always power by. Happy with hi s mo tor, McMurter was hampered by a poor selection of tires th at forced him to run rubber he had used in En gl and. Even so, McMurter a ppea red to be in ·the dri ver's seat. After trailing McMurter by a few bike lenghts, at best, for th e second half of th e race, Robbins was right with the lead er go ing into the last lap. H e mad e it around McMurter going into turn four, a nd held him off th rough the new back sectio n of the circui t. Wh en they hit th e turn 10 ha irp in a nd following back stre tch, however, McMurter n ew by. Robb in s lost eig ht bike lengths on the stra ig h t, bu t pulled even with McMurter and o ut-bra ked him going into th e ultra-tight turn 14-1 5 pairing, th e final two corners. McMurter used a n early apex to cut in side Robbins and get th e earl y drive, but cam e up inches sh ort at the finish. " Art the Dart" got th e win. McMurter was surprised, and even came around to get the checkered nag for the traditional victory lap after the cool-off. His onl y solace came from the Pro Open (F-I) event held earlier in th e da y, when he took a clear win over Maclvlj llan in a race Robbins chose not to enter. Tresser wins lodi Cycle Bowl TT By.M ikki McBride LODI, CA, MAY 10 On a hot and dusty Mother' s Day a t th e Lodi Cycle Bow I, And y Tresser o n hi s well -tuned Yam ah a rode 1.0 victor y in bo th the 500cc Expe rt and th e P ro-Am classes . In the 500cc Expert race, Scott Cha ppell o n hi s Ro tax was firs t off the line a nd into the long sweeping curve goi ng in to the sharper tree turn on the 'TT tra ck. Chappell oversho t th e turn and had to take a long way _ around th e o uts ide of the hay bal es. That move put Andy Tresser in the lead wh er e h e s tayed for th e remainder of the race wh ile Chappell ended up a t the back of th e pack. Rob ert Damron o n hi s Rotax held on to second pl ace for severa l laps until he went 100 wide in the tight switch-back on turn four com ing ou t of th e infi eld . This opened up room for J ohn Hl ebo on a Yam ah a and Kris Kiser on a H onda to come through 10 tak e over second and third, respectively. Coming ou t of turn five, goi ng into turn six, Kiser mad e a beautiful pa ss o n th e o utside of Hl ebo to tak e over second pla ce a t th e chec kered flag fo llowed by Hl ebo in th ird , Damron in fourth and Crai g Johnso n in fifth . Onl y eig ht riders showed up for the Pro-Am class, bu t T resser was first all the way wi th Kiser and Damron battl in g it o ut for second.
