Currently in Series Points Lead "Time to make it METZELER" By John Spear CLAVERACK, N Y, MAY3 Shawn Graham powered his way to a fl a wl ess ' o ne -o ne victory in a crowded class of Open Amateurs, in one of the hi ghlights of the first runni ng in 1987 of Claverack MX. Graham had little tro uble holdin g off Mic hael Ratto in th e firs t mota and Ken Meckin g in the second. Ratto, with a .third in th e second moto, took second overall. Mecking, who finished sixth in th e fir st rnot o, wound up fourt h overa ll, tra iling Mike Sambuco's three-four finish. In th e Expert classes, Ed Foedish topped a wild and woo ly l25cc class W a five-one finis h as three riders Ith all finis hed wit h six points between the twomo tos, Todd Dip pel, continuing the improvement he was showing toward the end of last year, had a pair of thirds which landed him seco nd overa ll while Jason DiD omeni co, in his best race as an Amateur, finis hed one-five for thi rd overall. . t In the 250cc Expert class, Car lo Coen ran away with both mo tos, while J ohn Ryan had hi s best finish ever in th e class with a pai r of seconds. Mike Spear , wh o usually challenges Coen in the front of th e pack, had two miserabl e sta rts and had to wor k hi s way th rough traffic. Ryan made use of it in both motos . to build a good size lead a nd then hold on to his second. Steady J ohn Coen had a four-four finish wi th hi s usual con sistent ride. Spear redeemed himself in th e Open Expert division wi th a pair of easy m oto wins. Dou g Mitchell , wh o was Spear 's shado w in th is class last year, picked up in th e same spot wi th a two-three finish for second overa ll. Former number on e pl ate holder Keith Mann, after a fifth in th e open ing moto, came back to out duel Mitchell for second in the final m ota to give him th ird overall. Bill y Kennedy ta pped th e biggest class of the day, the 62 rider 250cc Amateurs ·with a two-one finish as both first m ota winners, Anthony Marchin i and Robert Rob ichard ran into trouble in the second moto.
