Wh en th e two met in th e 250cc Expert division, it was a tigh t ba ttle, tha t saw Spear take top honor s. The cla sh between th e two was th e hig h ligh t of the Mo ther's Day MX he l d a t th e Wa ld en Pl a yb o ys' im proved track. Spea r and J ason DiDo menco led a ro w of five Ka wasa ki s a t th e start . of th e first 250cc Expert moto, but hy la p two , Spear was in front and Coe n was parked on his rear wh eel. With two la ps re mai n ing, Coe n rea lly started to pu t o n the pressure, but eac h time he p u lled even, Spear had the bette r line through the corner a nd ma naged to hold the lead. O n th e final lap, Coen was even on each corner a nd tucked inside Spear goi ng across th e tab letop jump. The two rid ers la nded side -by-side and both sai led over the do uble j ump , with . Spear a whee l len gth a hea d. Going into the second fro m last corner, Coen managed to get an inside li ne an d held a wheel length lead at the ch eckered flag. T he fast pace the two leaders set put them well over a minu te ahead of a n sur p rising ba ttl e for third p lace. Two relatively new Experts, DiDo men ico and Kyle Ellefsen, were going at it for third. DiD o men ico kep t Ellefsen a t ba y to clai m th e th ird spo t. T he seco nd 250cc mo to looked to be a repea t of the firs t. Spea r gra bbed th e ho lesh o t with Coen right on hi s rear -wh eel and the two im media tely sta rted to pull a way. T he dice ended wh en Coe n dumped it off the cul vert j um p. Spea r o pe ned a 25-second lead and by the tim e Coen wo rked his way back to second. it was too la te to mak e a cha rge. T ha t gave Spear th e overa ll with a 2-1 fini sh wh ile Coen was second with h is 1-2. Vetera n Keith Mann 's steady riding gave him thi rd overall wi th a 7-3 fin ish. • In the 125cc Experts , Todd Di ppel served notice that he is serio us th is year, taking a pa ir of seconds behind Coen whi le Kurt Renzla nd ad ded a 3-3 tall y for th ird.
