Coo k pulled away wh ile Buchl i remounted to fin ish second ahea d of Rob ert Rose. Moto two was a wild affai r, wit h Ge ne Bashline leading the fir st three la ps, th en Bill Perri to n the next two, before Br ant McC o y too k over. Buchli reach ed th ird behind McCoy a nd Perri ton by lap five, while Cook was bu sy charging to fourt h after being invol ved in a big first turn pil eup and remoun ting 19th. In a despe ration pass a ttem pt, Cook ran off th e trac k and-dropped to ninth. Within three laps, Coo k had ban zaied h is way to th e lead , o nly to cras h back to fourth beh ind McCo y, Perriton and Buchli. T wo laps la ter, Cook carved his way in to the lead aga in. Durin g the sa me la p , McCo y and Buchli lost their chains a nd dro pped back. On the last la p , Albert Fires tine a nd Rose passed Perr iton , an d the final order was Cook, Firestine a nd Rose. T he rela tively tight nine-m ile loop in cluded bo th established a nd virgin trails in th e beautiful, roll ing Missouri woodl and. Some creek cross ings and sh ort fire road s offered cha lle ngi ng va r iety to t he co mpeti tors. . A heavy rain crea ted a brief delay in starting the even t as well as necessitating sho rte ning it from th e schedu led two to o ne a nd one -ha lf hours. The change was welcom ed by most of th e 140-plus compe titors some of whom co ntin ued to sig n u p during the downpour. Due to th e ra pi dly deteri ora ting trail and rai ns, o nly the top few riders com p leted three loops, wh ile some were able to finish on ly o ne, even after the 90 m inute ti me li mi t ha d ended . T he magni tude of the rai ns torm was hard to beli eve. For exa mp le, a creek cross ing within a few miles of th e start which was less than a foo t deep at the beginnin g of the event, was four to five feet deep by th e tim e th e few three-lap fin ishers crossed it th e th ird tim e. Fortunately, memb ers of th e Missouri Mudders organ izing club were th ere to ass ist competitors. In fact , Greg Surdy ke, ISDE rid er wh o had drowned o u t hi s bike on the fir st loop , sho wed th e kind of comra dery associated with th e sport of motor cycle racin g wh en he stayed a t th e crossing to help carry o ther co m pe titors' bikes acro ss for th e remainder of the race. H e went o ver th e bars and tra vell ed almos t 40 feet on his back on the slick grass. Mungen ast got up , cleared the wire, and was back in th e race wi th min imal tim e lost. Four Seaso ns Cycle Center-backed .Corey Cope used the extra time to do some thi ng that has been near ly im possibl e thi s season - beat Stacey Coo k for the 250cc P ro class wi n. As the 250cc Pros hi t tu rn one, Derek Bro wn a nd J im Mi tchell led th e pac k, but wi th in half-a-la p , . Mit ch ell, Coo k and Cope had passed Brown . T he top three had begun pulling away wh en Cook clipped Mit ch ell 's rea r tir e a nd cras hed. Mit ch ell a nd Cope conti n ued pu lling away, while Cook was back chas ing Brown a nd Kip Sande ll. J us t before the H an dicap main event Brown , on th e Shoei/ Lou's Lea thers / J us tice Broth ers/ Ci rcl e Industr ies/Keech Video J awa , won a best of th ree ma tch race from Phil Collin s. Many peop le felt tha t Brown would be too fati gu ed in th e main, but th at was not th e case. Steve Furman , o f T eam Blaze Ra cin g USA, set th e ear ly pace in th e eigh t lapper from th e shor t yardage. Sco tt Brant, wh o already won two Handicap mains in the week, came off th e line in second with Greg H ancock third. Brant wen t to th e o u tside allowing Hancock a nd Bro wn to adva nce to second and th ird ea rly in the event . Brown was on a ro ll a nd he fought hi s wa y past H ancock a t the end of la p two . Next o n the list for Brown, who sta rted on the 40-yard lin e, was firs t pl ace a nd Fu r m an. Brown pu lled u p to h is rear tire a t the end of lap four a nd he forced his way to th e in side in tum o ne o n lap five. Fu rman held the lead until the back straight but Brown fou nd the in side line an d strea ked into the point posi tio n. Brown was in fu ll command when he whee lied across the line with his first Speedway USA wi n of 1987. Seco nd , three len g th s back, wa s Brant with H an cock thi rd.
