The quarter mil e cla y o val was in perfect cond itio n , a nd pa ssing could be don e anywhe re a ri der had th e hors epow erand skill to mak e it work. West ca p tu re d th e first 250 cc qualifying heat aboa rd hi s Kawa saki, but he had a race-long co ntes t with Rob ert Lewis. West tried to ge t by Lewi s on both sides a nd fin all y got by o n the whi te £l ag lap. Rusty Rogers foll owed West th ro ugh, to take seco nd. Rogers came back to wi n the seco nd heat. Again , it was Lewi s in the co n tenders spo t, with West a close third. As th ey ca me to th e fini sh line, West sq ueezed by to tak e seco nd position. The main event had Rogers in th e lead wh en th e green light flash ed . West and Lewi s were all over his rear wh eel. The threesom e rod e as o ne; tied together, until th e eigh th circu it, whe n Rogers bobbled in th e th ird turn. T hat was a ll West needed to ge t to the ' front. Rogers narrowly he ld on for second, with Lewis a half wheel leng th behind. The 500cc riders were a ll set 10 giv e G lenn Baar a rea l workout. Clayton Ol iver put hi s H onda out front in the first qua lifi er a nd held th e lead until 50 feet from the chec kered flag. Baa r mad e an o u tside pass work to get by with just in ch es to spar e. Baar settled for second and held o ff th e repeated cha llenges o f Oliver a nd Rickman to get set up for th e feature. Baar got the lead o ff the line as th e light turned g reen in the fin al a nd he kept h is Yamaha in front the full di stan ce. The race for seco nd was a good one. Lew is a nd Oliver staye d close until the halfwa y mark. Oliver . had pulled even with Lewi s a nd look ed to be in good sha pe whe n he bobbled , putting him do wn on th e tra ck. Oli ver go t back ' up, bu t lost a lap in th e process, giving Chris Ri ckman a third p lace finish . J ohn Ni cken s rod e hi s Suzuki to victory a gai n in th e 50cc main. Nickens closest com pe tition. Chris Copley was a quarter o f a lap back . Brian Strong proved strong riding his Yamaha to victor y in the 60cc class.
