Cook smokes LakewoodMX By Larry Johnson LAKEWOOD, CO, MAR: 15 e a one-year subscription and get Cycle News home delivered every week! A $75.00 value for only $32.50 Sports Riders Association of Colorado motocrossers finally got their 1987 seasortunderway Sunday after being snowed out for three straight weeks. Over 360 riders showed up anxious to work out the winter kinks, some were too anxious as the day was marred with numerous crashes and injuries. Stacey Cook showed that the time he spent racing in California wasn't wasted as he scored two Pro class wins. A few riders came to the event better prepared after spending the past two months racing at the Golden State Series. . That· experience paid off in big dividends. Cook, for instance, captured both the 125 and 250cc Pro overalls. The CM&H/Hallman/ Bolle-sponsored Honda pilot won the first moto in the 125cc class ahead of Albert Firestine and Alpine Suzuki's Jim Mitchell. He finished second behind defending champ Tim Buchli in round two and nailed down the overall with a 1-2 tally. Another Golden State competitor, Corey Cope posted a first moto win over Cook in the 250cc division, but Cook traded positions with Cope in round two for his double victory. Two more California visitors dominated the Open Pros: Dave Newell nailed both wins ahead of 1986 250cc State Champ Kip Sandell. One upset occurred in the Expert level. Scott Fulcher took both moto wins over defending champ Andy Atkins in the 80cc class. Vet Expert Shawn Smith, recently turned 30, traded moto wins with 1985 champ Monty Kyle, back after a year off. Smith won the decisive second moto for the overall. Dave Wollaston made a strong bid for his third consecutive title in the Senior Experts as he rode his new KTM to a perfect I-I tally.
