Yamaha pilot Jeff Jennings and Suzuki-mounted Tony Spear for me 250cc Pro class win at this week's SMX event at DeAnza Cycle Park. Spear and French dueled in the first mota until a lapped rider helped Spear take a trip to the turf and French went on to claim me win with Separ remounting for second and Jennings cruisin~ in for third. French jumped to the early lead in round two action with Spear closing in me final laps. The stage was set for a final last turn charge when, once again, traffic slowed the action and Spear lost me race and second place to Jennings as he once again crashed. The overall win went to French with Jennings placing second and Spear'settling for mird. Yamaha rider John Singletary and Honda pilot Glen Wells entertained the spectators wim exciting action in the 250cc Intermediate race with each rider taking one win and one runner-up position. Top honors in me Vet Novice class went to Kawasaki-mounted Ray Franklin, as Gregory Wickam held off fellow Honda rider Wesley Bachman for second overall. Jeff Bruce swept both motos of the 250cc Novice class on board his Honda. Bruce moved to me front early in each round as Steve Watson kept his Hon.da in the chase from me number two slot. Kawasaki rider Chris Morton placed third. Jeff Frye battled me huge 125cc Beginner class and a strong charge by Anthony Otwell to claim the overall win. Honda rider Frye pulled to an amazing lead in round one but had to surrender to Otwell's Suzuki in the second race. Still, Frye's 1-2 score gave him the overall ahead of ' Otwell's 4-1, while Kerry Sorensen rounded out me top three on his Honda. Results OPEN PRo: 1. Din Berg (Kaw); 2. Rivas rips at Westhampton mounted Morrison topped the field of 55 competitors, taking the lead on the very first lap and extending it throughout the race. '. Brian Cox took the lead at the start but he missed a turn and dropped to third while Morrison took over the lead. .•Cox and Todd Gebhart hooked up 10 a battle that lasted the en'tire race. Cox, riding an Open class Honda, . took second overall over Yamahamounted Gebhart, who was on an Open class Yamaha Yamaha-mounted Keith Bucher t0r-ped the 250cc class, leading Jeff Hillis and Greg King home in that division. WESTHAMPTON, LI, NY, MAR.S ADRA~ honors Over 330 'riders invaded the Long Island Sports Committee's Westhampton Raceway. The Florida style sand track series' best proved to be very fast and provided some great motocross action. The day's racing saw four qualifying races in the 125cc Novice in addition to qualifiers in the 125 and 250cc Amateur and 250cc Novice classes. Jason Rivas took his TUF Racingsponsored Kawasakis to impressive double wins in me Senior Mini and l25cc Novice classes. Rivas had a perfect day winning all four motos. Junior Mini action saw Danny Golden take his DG Y-sponsored Yamaha to a pair of moto wins. In me 125cc Pro/Expen class it was Mark Lackowicz taking the early lead before succumbing to a ceased engine at the midpoint of th~ first moto. New Jersey Kawasaki rider Brian Carrol went on to take both moto wins, second went to last week's winner Yamaha rider Ed Foedish. . Pro/Expert (250cc) action saw Eddie Bao's Kawasaki lead every lap in both motos. Runner-up went to Rich Carrino. Open Pro/Expert action saw Jim Habacker take the overall on his Honda with Keith Mann's Yamaha taking runner-up. Delayed from its traditional midJanuary date, me event was held in me Grand Ballroom at Phoenix's Pointe at South Mountain. The gala affair was a real change from our usual desert meetings - white tablecloths and saladIorksl I'Uadmit I couldn't recognize some of me faces without the dust. After dinner the awards began with new number one plateholder Jeff Darland accepting the first of many trophies to be awarded by ADRA President Phil Auernheimer that evening. Along wim'motorcycle/ATV and acressories displays, KT¥'s Jack Lehto was there with his checkbook, Pilying off his marque's series awards. A drawing for door prizes left few empty handed as donations from over 20 companies, from Malcolm Smith gloves to a new M-Star 250 from Dirt Unlimited, went up for grabs. .Before the awards presentation concluded special awards went to "Motorcycle Sportsman of the Year" Boyd Abbott, "Sponsor of the Year" Casebeer Motocross Team, "OffRoad Mechanic of the Year" Dirt Unlimited and yours truly as "Off Road Journalist of the Year." Thanks to all. ADRA's medical team and able sweep riders were also honored for meir important contributions. And for me second consecutive year, the "Williams Gan~" earned the Thad Caulkins Memonal trophy for "giving their best for motorcycle/
