CA, FEB. 21 Nalional Champion Terry Cunningham rode his Husqvarna AUlomalic lO lhe overall win in lhe Mark Bullard Tony Spear piloled his new Suzuki lO a demoralizing vicwry over his opposilion in the 250cc Pro class al die SMX Memorial Enduro. HScH-sponsored Allen Graviu made Lhe champ work for his win. The KTM rider dropped 14 poiOls. juSt one more than Cunningham's winning total of 13. Over 400 competilOrs showed up for the eveOl Lhat began wiLh a short eulogy at the rider's meeting during which everyone was told Lhe eveOl was being named after and dedicated to Mark Bullard, who lost his life while helping layout Lhe course. The sand whoops and tight trails of the course didn't StOP the top contenders from clos~ng in on each other. Kevin Hines led the way after Lhe first section by dropping only four poiOls. Cunningham and Graviu were six poiOls down. Hines' bid for the win ended when he slammed into a tree and had lo change his KTM's froOl wheel when he gotlO the pits. That was all Cunningham and Graviu needed to finish one-two. Hines finished Lhird overall. just one point down from Graviu. As Lhe trophy pre entation, Cunningham graciously handed thewinner's re\'Olving trophy to the family of Mark Bullard lo prize for Lhe year. Perris MX. Spear jumped lo commanding leads early in each moLO as he styled to the overall win with a perfect score. A fierce battle developed behind the leader between Honda rider Colin Carcher and Suzuki-mounted LuLher French. Karcher and French traded runner-up finjshes with the second overall money going lo French. Kawasaki rider Tom Holt won Lhe I25cc Pro class after Craig Canoy, Lhe winner of the first molO, crashed his Kawasaki in the second moto. Hondamounted Jeff Tuuobene charged from a poor start lo earn second overall ahead of Kawasaki rider Chris Heinrich. Cycle World magazine's Ron Lawson rode a Suzuki to tOP honors in Lhe 250cc Intermediate class. Chasing Lawson lo the flag was Honda rider Richard Calsadellas wiLh Doug Allen rounding out the lOp Lhree on a Honda. Honda rider Allan Egbert just edged Yamaha-mounted Marvin Olson for Lhe Vet Intermediate class win. Egbert posted a 1-2 lo beuer Olson's 3-1. Honda rider Bengt Johansson went 2-3 for third overall.
