CA, FEB. 14 While he was in town for a few weeks to teach his trials school, Bernie Schreiber made an appearance at the A.T.A. Plonkers Trials Club's first eveD! of 1987. Mounted on the 1987 Fantic 30 I Progress2 Monshock, Schreiber decimated the Expert ranks as expeCled. An unexpeCled surprise was the second place ride of a relative newcomer, expert Tom Hamann of San Diego. Hamann lOok control of second place early in the day, and fought off the tenacious efforts of Honda-mounted John Robertson to capture the runner-up position. It was only July of 1985 that Hamann won the Novice class at El Trial DeEspana, making his progress through the ranks even more impressive. Schreiber commented that the trial was relatively easy, and that American promoters mustlOughen up sections if U.S. riders are to develop the skills necessary 10 compete on the European fronl. After the event, Schreiber put on a truly awesome display of trick riding, utilizing air turns, bunny hops, and Boaters that left the audience with dropped jaws. Schreiber culminated his mini-exhibition ~ith a jump off of a 15 foot-high rock, down onto the flat ground. His only comment was, "It's kinda hard on the wrists!" A big crowd of 84 riders took on the challenging 10 sections laid out by trials organizer Bruce De Haven and Butch Chappelle. This was the first time that the Johnson Valley area had been used for an observed trial. But judging by the Wrnlm:e.
