A $75.00 value for only $32.50 By Bill Spencer SAN JOSE, CA, JAN. 4 With a rare winter storm drenching the Bay Area, it only slowed the fourth round of Endurothons at the San Jose Fairgrounds Speedway. Greg Sowle topped the combined first and second events while Edd Haymond teamed with young Steve Raymond for a powerful performance in beating out Scott Nail for the Junior-Expert.run. Very muddy conditions postponed the runn ing of the first two hour slop fest which was fine for most riders as the track prep and drying conditions made it somewhat better. Sowle and his 250cc Yamaha led from wire-towire despite losing a fender, which became fairly common in the 30 rider field. Brad Clausen and his fourstroke XR500 Honda special dogged the litlie guy for half the race, but got caught by Vet Terry Dunworth for the second overall spot. Three class first place trophies were divided among the first three riders. Craig and Jeff Dillard copped a fourth overall and second Open Novice over Mike Carlton and Tom Ward, who spent a lot of time up front, bUl(oo much switching around which hurt their overall effort. An interesting entry was seventh overall behind John Pierce and Tim Boone taking the second 250cc Novice trophy. Road racers Vince Costa and Allen Satterlee proved that they can certainly handle the slosh. Not too far behind, a lap, was the first mini. emry of Tom Hastings and Paul Simmons. While the second race was much dryer and much easier to ride, the entry dwindled to just a dozen. Gary Rabe teamed up with Steve Matlock to lead the early laps over Scott Nail's Honda CR500 and Bill Ripley's Honda XR350. Matlock traded spots. with Nail on lap four then dropped out with motor problems. Moving up from a sevemh place start was Old Timer Expert Haymond taking fourth on lap eight and holding a good spot until he handed the M-Star to up-and-coming £1at track star Raymond. .
