Russ Paulk. the Carolinas to give promoter Henry DeGouw some help wilh the new computer and lend their expertise to the system. All went well as was expected when they are around. It was Russ Paulk who topped the field in a competitive lOO-mile endurance race. The day's racing started with the first lOO-mile endurance race of 1987. The LeMans-style start had several riders out in front that are not usually there, Rick Jackson, riding a twoyear old Kawasaki, led for three quarters of the race, before getting sidelined by a novice rider who had lost his footing in a corner. Tennessee rider Paulk, who had steadily worked his way through the field, took over first place and held to the checkered £lag. Paulk took GTO honors with Wink Price second and Rudolf Von Lignau third. The GTU honors went to Ron Cole of Miami, Jeff Burke of Palm Beach. Hans Wilson, and Curt Kicklighter/Danny Roberts of Palm Beach Suzuki fourth. The sprint races started out with the Formula Two Expert event. Don Jacks entered the front straight about two bike lengths ahead of Bill Beesch. In the corners Beesch would close the gap but Jacks' bike had just a little more top end on the straights. At the checkered £Jag it was Jacks, with Beesch two bike lengths back, the c10sesl anyone has finished with Jacks in the last two outings at Moroso. Newton Heston finished third. Carlos Casas led the Novice class to the £lag with David Lee, Michael Lehning, Bill Kranenbergand George Matthews Jr., rounding out the top five places. Again a very close finish with the top seven riders all in line. The Unlimited Superbike race started as a battle right at the drop of the green £lag. Paulk led the first lap with Scott Cantrell, Mark Chin, Rich Shaw and Bill Kelly sizing each other up in the corners. Cantrell missed a gear, and went wide going into turn two. Kelly went under with Shaw falling in behind Cantrell. Down the back straight Shaw outbraked Cantrell for third. Kelly took the next five laps to reel in Paulk and then pass him. Shaw drafted by Chin for third. That was the finishing order at the £Jag. In the Heavyweight Superbike race it was Kelly again with Shaw, Kevin Blais and Chin all up front. Shaw had Kelly set up for a pass on the last lap but the £Jagman neglected to wave the white £lag for the last lap. He threw the checkered £lag instead. In the UnlimitedSuperbike Novice class Ron Price led the entire race and finished with a considerable lead. Kirk Frost was second and Tom Heavey right behind in third. Heavey rides for Competition Cycle and Willits Insurance. Steve Chung finished fourth and Chris Smith fifth. Price also captured the Heavyweight Superbike Novice honors. Price was out in front and running all alone for the first lap. South Florida's John Choate broke out of the pack of!6 riders to take over second place. Choate looked very impressive in his debut ride on his new bike. Young Choate pulled up to Price's rear fender a couple of times but didn't chance a pass as Price had the track pretty well covered. Kirk Frost, Mike Hattaway, Phil Stamatyades, Joe Taylor and John Costa went third through seventh behind Price and Choate. Formula One aces Paulk and Ft. Meyers Cycle rider Thomas Stevens swapped places for 10 laps. Paulk, riding the same bike he won the endurance race on, was running "Team Miami Vice's" endurance racer. The Suzuki GSXRllOO sponsored by Larry's Auto Pans/Speed & Sport Cycle/Airbrite Screens of Naples, had problems early in the day with ignition boxes, but started to show its stuff as the day wore on. At the finish line Paulk had a nine inch lead on Stevens to capture the win. Bill Kelly had Rick Shaw and David Reed all over the back of his bike. Cantrell who had been running up front had to pull off the track when a bad oil leak on the Suzuki in front of him splashed about two quarts on his leathers and face shield, causing very poor visibility. BAY CITY, MI, JAN. 18 Craig Pickett and Brad Lowe were double class winners at the second round of the Michigan State Championship Series at the Bay County Fairgrounds. 1be event was run by the Tri-City Competition Club as part of the Bay City Wimer Festival. Ron Schwartz of the TCCC handled the headaches for the day and after a late start. 258 entries were run in short four-lap finals that were clicked off smoothly. A bright sun cam~ out and approximately 250 spectators were on hand as the finals got underway. Lowe got the holeshot in the 125cc class on his borrowed Kawasaki and stretched out an early lead. Brent Armbruster broke from the pack on his Yamaha, and closed the gap to pressure Lowe at the finish, but Lowe took the win. Twenty-four 250cc B class riders couldn't match Jeff Chapko for his first class win after three years on ice. Doug O'Boyle forced his Yamaha into second after following Eric Froncek until the last lap. Another National champ, Dan Crawford, bit the dust in the 250cc A class, this time in the first tum, but he was up quickly and the race was not restarted. That left Lowe, on another borrowed bike with the holeshot, the lead, and an unchallenged win. His tally for the season is a perfect four for four. Pickett picked up his first win of the day in the very tough 500cc A class. A restart was caused due to the worst crash of the afternoon, with a rider's leg being sucked up underneath a rear fender by the studded tire. He walked away with no apparent major damage. Pickett avoided any such possibilities on the restart by grabbing the lead from the £lash of the green starting light, leaving Rick Benjamin to defend second place from challenges by Jon Collins. The Pro class money was picked up by Pickell for his second win on his stock framed Yamaha TT500, turning 15.6 second laps in a wire-to-wire win. The rubber solo classes provide a little slower action on the track, but the competition between riders is still quite intense. In the Lightweight class Joe Buckley, Ron Dodd, and Wiltz Wagner looked like they were riding one large motorcycle for two laps, then Buckley gained a~ advantage on his two-stroke bike. The Heavyweight class wasn't as close as Leo Anthony Jr. smoked everybody on the first lap and coasted the rest of the way for the win. Middleweight rubber sidecar class action featured National and State champs Rick Kearns/Randy Putze's Yamaha pushing past fast starters Todd and Pamela Cunningham on the back suaight for the win. Father and son Dick and George Ranney piloted a rare left-hand hack to third place. Results 66: 1. Ryan Allen (Yamt 2. Damon Pal.... (Han).
