Wilseyville HS win to McPhee By Bill Spencer WILSEYVILLE, CA, NOV. 9 II so, you need tOHM LOAN'S eyeL COMPETITION SUPPORT DISCOUNT PROGRAM YZ to FJ to FZ Wti 32 With only two races left in the District 36 Cros Country Championship season, Lance McPhee and his Pro Cycle of Concord Suzuki RM250 puta dent in Duke Dowell's point lead by winning the Blue Mt. Timber Wolves M.C.'s annual Wilseyville Hare Scrambles. The two and a half hour event for juniors and experts started to close to the 8:30 start time. Ken McKenzie took the holes hot on his KX but didn't make it much past the first check with a four inch slice in his rear tire. "I had a good run going but the trail has a lot of loose stu£[ that you can't see through and I hiLa rock that cut the tire." McKenzie said as he watched the race continue. Precisely at the 22 minute mark, Mike Harper and his CR250 Honda whistled through the check with a rear Oat. McPhee was second two minutes behind while Duane Scott was third over Duke Dowell and Charlie Smart, Ed Marchini, while holding second in the points, was not having a good first lap with Eddie Edgyed, Sr., coming through about 12th overall and first Vet Expert over Tom Barbero, but Eddie would drift backwards on his [our-stroke Honda while Barbero would go on to win by a wide margin and easily clinch the top Vet plate. Former motocrossers Dave Wood and Jef[ Watts were hooking up for a good battle in the Open Expert. Harper blitzed by on lap two with a lap time under 22 minutes and the same £lat. McPhee was still some two and a half minutes in arrears while Dowell had gotten by Scott on his Dave Harris-tuned Suzuk.i. Scott and Smart smoked by on their YZs I with Dave Porter, Marchini and Wood in close contact. Just before the start of lap three, Walt Feyling came through leading the Old Timers Expert class by a wide margin. Harper continued his leading chores, still holding off McPhee with a tire that looked pretty ragged as he blitzed by camp. Old Timers Expert AJ Waters wasn't liking life on the trail and stopped for a bitof air that would cost him fifth place while Dowell was now just over a minute behind McPhee. Scott pitted still in fourth while Smart and Porter came by very close over Marchini. Harper came by just 30 seconds up on McPhee for the start of lap four, but McPhee pitted for gas and the Red Neck Roosters did a fine job and quick.! y got him on the course again. Dowell was less than 20 seconds back when McPhee left the pits. Harper came by for the start of lap seven with just a minute lead on McPhee and Dowell a close third. About six minutes later, the checkered came out with Steve Zanone one of the first in and winner in the Open Junior class. McPhee grabbed the overall with 45 seconds to spare while Harper barely beat out Dowell by 10 seconds. After two and a hal[ hours, the first three were within a minute of each other, and one rode with a nat tire [or most o[ the distance. "I was really trying to play it safe and get some point," said McPhee. "When I pitted, the crew told me about Harper's nat ;)nd so I tried chasing him, but it wasn't much good until the end. On the last lap, everybody was Buttram blasts las Vegas MX By Dick Goodwin LAS VEGAS, NV, ocr. 26 Las Vegas Motocross Park unveiled a new class today; the "25 and over" Vets division. EP's Bill Buttram took an immediate liking to the "Super Vets" class, winning its first ever overall crown after dueling with Doug Stadtlander and Tony Berlutti. Buttram started the action off by out-dragging Gene Mason and Stadtlander down the start-straight to lead the big group into the first turn. Berlutti got on the gas quickly and moved up to third, just behind Mason. After scratching through the first few comers, Berlutti emerged in second place and started charging after leader Buttram. He tried to stuff his way past, but Buttram wasn't having any of it. They slashed and battled their way around the track for the remainder of the race, with Buttram just holding of[ Berlutti for the win. Stadtlander edged Mason for third. It was Buttram and Berlutti arguing over the lead again in race two, with Stadtlander a close third. The top three spots stayed the same for a couple of laps, until Berlutti encountered problems and Stadtlander moved up to challenge Buttram for the lead. The fight [or first was intense, at one point resulting in a midair collision between the two combatants. Both riders got out of shape, but stayed upright. Stadtlander recovered first and the Motorcycle Tire Center-sponsored horshoe went on to claim first over Buttram. Mason came on strong to take third. The final results had Buttram with the overall victory, Stadtlander in second and Berl utti in third. Action was hot and heavy in the 125cc Intermediate division. Ken Arnold, Kerry Mulligan, and Lonnie Faulkner all blasted off the line in unison, with the Kal-Gard/AXOsponsored Arnold squeaking out the early lead. Front Row Racing's Mulligan came on with a rush, as the Honda of Las Vegas racer sna tched the lead in the first lap. Faulkner hung tough in third. Mulligan was on the gas when his bike's pipe melted, putting him out o[ the race with a seized engine. Arnold took advantage and stormed home with the win, followed by Dialed Racing's Faulkner in a solid second spot. EP's T.L. Taylor claimed third.
