Glass, Coombs fake Landover MX By James Derek LANDOVER, MD, SEPT. 14 Honda-mounted Jeff Glass continued his summer-long hot streak while Davey Coombs gathered his first win of the ser- 32 closer over each jump. But time was on the leader's side as the checkers came out with Glass passing Stanley at the finish, both within one second of Coombs. Bias battled back from a terrible start for fourth LO maimain his series lead in the 250cc class, as well as the 125s. ies in Round I I of the World Spons/ AMAIUSHRA Arenacross Championships today. A sell-out crowd of over 16,000 race fans saw Glass battle all night long with series poim leader Mike Bias in the I25cc final in the first Arenacross ever held near the nation's capiLOI. The AXO/Scoll/Shoei-backed Coombs' 250cc final win \\las even closer as he, runner-up Glass, and early leader Brian Stanley from Beckley, West Virgini:!, crossed the finish line just one second apart. After some ATV racing and a live show from a DC area rock and roll band, the 125sroaTedoHthelinewith Bias, Stanley, Glass, and Evans making the first four a red wave of Hondas. Back in the first corner Coombs was busy extracting Carsten's jammed leg from between his wheel and swingarm. Pinney soon moved by the Are- nacross rookie Evans, but the LOp three were already clear and having a race of their own up front. On lap five Glass mustered a pass on Stanley and wem after Bias. Aided by a string of lapped riders, Glass slipped under the tra££ic on the inside at the halfway mark and turned up the pace a few notches. Bias cominued to have trouble with the backmarkers (or seve.ral laps, but finally (ound his line with three laps. to go. Focused on the leader's rear tire, Bias began an allout assault (or the top spot that lasted to the checkered £lag, b.ut it was Glass by a wheel. Stanley crossed the line in third, and a spectacular leap by Brian Carroll over fourth place Pinney left him with nothing more than a separated shoulder and the crowd's appreciation. A determined Stanley burst inLO turn one in the number one spot in the 250cc final and sped away from from-runners Coombs, Moore, Glass and Pinney. The top three riders held their own for the first few laps umil Glass began working on Coombs aher moving imo the third place slot. In every corner the 125 vicLOr pressed hard on Coombs' £lank as he wem from inside to outside looking for a way by. A lillIe past the halfway poim and Glass cominued LO pound his AXO teammate as they entered a group o( lapped riders. Two turns later Coombs blew into the far corner on the inside of a throng of slower riders and unknowingly LOok the lead - the pressure from number three had drawn him to within striking distance of a bottled-up Stanley. The leader was trying an outside berm around two slower riders tangled and shot over inLO his path, giving Coombs an open invitation (or the lead. The new top gun now directed his ride toward the checkered £lag while Stanley and Glass catapulted with a 1-1 score over Virginia's John Winslow in the Senior Mini class at Lake Sugenree Motocross Raceway. Newly crowned AMA 500cc National Champion David Bailey entered in the 125cc A and Open A classes. with father Gary Bailey riding the Super Senior class. Both Baileys were riding under exhibition status and as expected sLOle the show. . Jim Neese received heavy pressure from John Winslow in both Senior Mini moLOS but pulled out some breathing space in the final laps of moLO two to take the win in style. Pete Payne followed Neese and Winslow in (or third overall. Yamaha of Fayetteville's Patrick Slate leda Yamaha sweepoftheJunior Mini class win over Brad McKee and Kevin Webb. Hi-Point/Scoll USA-sponsored Zack Bradshaw was up to his winning ways in the Pee Wee class as he led both moLOS from start to finish over Tres Bruce and John Doss. Chris Lindley pulled out the stops in 250cc C class action with a double mOlO sweep over Michael Henry whi Ie Tim Mantooth edged James Parks for third overall. David Eller reeled in Honda o( Winston-Salem's Danny Mathis for the first 250cc B class moLO win with Kirk Johnson catching Mathis on the last lap for second. Johnson outrode Eller for the second moLO win and the overall followed by Ell'er, Mathis and Michael Harlow. Team Honda's David Bailey aced the first 125cc A IDOLO over Mike Andrewswith Paul Bell laking third. Bailey and Andrews traded paim for the second moLO lead until the last lap when Bailey's bike rolled LO a SLOp, out of gas. "It was losing power and when it bogged off a jump I knew what happened," said Bailey later. Andrews motored past with Bell next ahead of Joey DeLuke. Bell's 1-2 punch wrapped up the 250cc A win over Andrews' 3-1 finish with Lance Eubank going 2-3 for third. Larson fops ThursfonMX By D. Richard OLYMPIA, WA, SEPT. 21 Mike Larson won a close battle against Steve Oster in the 250cc. Pro class, during round two of the Washington AMA Coca Cola Classic MoLOcross Series at Thurston ORV Spons Park in Olympia. The dogfight was an intense one as the two battled handlebar-to-handlebar throughout both moLOS. In the first moLO, Larson and Oster pulled away from the rest of the field with Larson maintaining a twosecond advantage over Oster most of the time. Late in the race, Larson began to take control by developing a four-second margin over Osler. Larson eventually captured the win with Oster very close behind. ' In the deeding second moLO, Larson was, once again, found out in front with Oster chasing close behind. The dice lasted for half the race until Oster's Kawasaki developed mOLOr pro.blems when water started pouring out of the radiaLOr's vent tube. Oster quickly faded and eventually dropped out of the race. This gave Larson a comfortable lead in which he held on for as he crossed the cheCkered £Jag. In Open Expert action, David Rhodes used his Husqvarna 510cc four-stroke to nab the win. Rhodes devoured ScOll Smith, Ken Veller and Joel Palmer, while roosting to victory. Eighteen 250cc B riders chased Honda-mounted Je££ Adams in both moLOS, but no one could catch him. Adams claimed the number one position followed by Dave Suelzle and John Anderson. Results 80 A: 1. Scratch main event. Schwanz (Justice Brothers/CT.I. Brace/Sil kolene/Bel 1I0akley Weslake) was sparkling on the Scratch side o( the program and no more so than in the main event. The captain of the K'ing's Lynn Stars in the British League wrestled the lead away from "Rad" Brad Oxley in the first turn and led the rest of the way. Oxley was never more than three lengths
