Ott was off the 30-yard line but he swept past Tim McCasiand and Billy Hamill as they came off turn four on the opening circuit. That gave the cushionbouncing Ott the lead and he immediately opened up some breathing room and it was.good for him as Mike Faria was steaming thrQugh the field. Faria emerged in second at the white flag but there was no time left for him to track down leader Ott, who bagged the win and then wheeJied around the circuit for the fans. Faria rode it out in second with Gary Hicks in third. Mark Hately almost missed the start of the Division Two main, but hejust beat the two minute warning and he then beat the remainder of the field to capture his first IMS win of 1986. Consistent Jim Blan was second with Pat Hawley third. Scott Clark (Speedway Associates/Clark USA! Nitto triples at Firebird RR By Michael Ross CHANDLER, AZ, SEPT. 20 AFM Champ Walter Nitto bared his teeth Saturday night and took decisive wins in Superbike A, B, and Form ula One during the fifth and final round of PRRO's (Phoenix Road Racing Organization) light Racing Series. litto took the S'!perbike A and B title with those wms. itto's first victory on his Shoei/ SuperTrapp/Dunlop/Performance Machine-sponsored FZ750 came in Superbike B. An inspired Craig Martin set the pace early in that race with his Kingman Cycle-sponsored Yamaha. Martin rode a brilliant race until lap four when a small mistake let .Nitto and Yamaha-mounted Kelly Byrd slip past. Nitta sprinted to victory with Byrd in second place less than one second behind. Martin finished in third. Nitta's second win during Superbike B was a walkover. The California resident led every lap in total command with Byrd and Martin taking second and third at the checkered flag. The last race of the evening Formula One saw Byrd switch to a 900 Ninja and lead until lap 13 of the 15-lap sprint when Nitta dove past under braking for turn one to take the lead. "I let Kelly lead until I saw sparks start coming off his exhaust pipe, that's when I knew he was trying to pull away. So I gassed it up and caught him," explained Nitto after the race. Byrd wasn't the only rider throwing sparks. Tecza of Team Double Down flew to another uncol1lested win in Superbike C and the class championship on his Bill Daly-LUned FZ600 sponsored by Dyno-J etiKerker/ Sam's Town/ evada Yamaha/Yokohama. Dale Keiffer, sponsored by Tiger Racing and Dyno-Jet Research went head-to-head with Michael Ross on his J & J Cycle-sponsored FJ600 in Stock C. Ross and Keiffer battled intensely for the entire 15-lap sprint. Ross edged Keiffer in a photo finish to take the win, but Keiffer took the class title. SEPT. 21 On a hot, dry and dusty day at Port City MX, Yamaha-mounted Ricky Steverson racked up a 3-1 tall y for the overall victory in today's highly-competitive l25cc ovice clas . In the first mota, Scott Grater blasted out of the starting gate and captured the holes hot over Scott Ballard and Steverson. Mike Speh and Howard Gunter tangled handlebars right out of the gate. Ballard began gaining ground on Grater in the straights only to crash and drop to fourth, handing Steverson second and Speh third. With Gunter way out in (ront, Ballard set after and passed Speh for third, then he set after Steverson. hortly after, Steverson fell and dropped to third, giving Ballard second place. At th.e finish, it was Grater taking the easy win ahead of Ballard, Steverson and Speh. Ballard jammed into the lead at the start of the second mota just ahead of Steverson and Speh. Grater started the moto in (ifth but quickly worked his way up through the field, while Ballard and Steverson pulled away from the rest of the pack. The baule for the lead lasted for a few laps until Ballard's bike began suffering mechanical problems. Steverson went on to take the win, while Ballard held on and fil)ished second. Grater settled for third. In the Mini Senior class, Honda rider Ricky Grimes 'went heads up against Kawasaki pilot John Lofton. In the first moto, Grime smoked-it off the line and took the holeshot; Lofton was second followed by Kevin Sheppard and Timmy Johnston. Sheppard eventually crashed moving Randy Green finished second in the 250-500cc Pro-Am class and topped the Open Pro-Am division at Castle Rock TT. Johnston up to third. The remainder of the race stayed the same. The second and deciding mota saw Lofton stuff Grimes to the first turn, but Lofton's lead was short-lived. Two turns later, Grimes returned the favor and overtook the lead. Not long after that, Lofton bit the dust letting Sheppard by (or second. Hewitt hauls at Castle Rock IT By Derryl Anderson CASTLE ROCK, WA, AUG. 30 Glynn Hewitt took his Rotax to a win in the 250-500cc ProAm class of the Castle Rock TT held tonight at the fairgrounds'. In the first heat race Dan Cordell got the scratch followed by Rick Mscishowski, Darrel Davis, Del Schnitzer, Troy Yeo, Hewiu, Rex Fisher and Robert Frohs. Hewitt was on the gas right away as he picked off Yeo and Davis by the second lap. Hewitt's baule with Schnitzer took both of them right on by Cordell. At the £lag it was Schnitzer with Hewitt close, then 15 yards back to Cordell, Davis, Yeo and the others. In heat two Don Wilson gOt the holeshot ahead of John Clayton, Randy Green, J im Servo, Dean Autrey and Ron Adams. Green moved into second and was all over Wilson lap after lap. On the last lap Green went hard into turn three and moved around Wilson the long way. Crossing the line it was a photo finish. Behind them in order was Clayton, Servo, Autrey, Adams and Aaron Waggoner. Green took the early lead in the main event followed by Hewitt, Wilson, Cordell, Schnitzer and the others. In the dogleg Hewitt passed Green and remained there right to the finish. On lap two Schnitzer got by Cordell in turn one. Davis moved up behind Schnitzer a lap later, but then the bike quit and left the youngster on the sidelines. On lap four Schnitzer got past Wilson for third. Bertolette wins HGM dirt drags By Jack Cobb NEWWATERFORD,OH,SEPT.14 Bill Bertolette, after a first round loss to Mike Buege, came back to beat him twice in the final rounds to gain the Hog Gas Midwest National Title at New Waterfor.d Dirt Drags, today. Riding the M & M Cycle H-D Sponster, Bertolette lost to Buege's "Hog" engine while sleeping at the line. It meant that Bertoleue would have to run a "per(ect" race for the rest of the afternoon. Second round action saw Buege top Maryland's Paul Plummer while Bertoeltte blew away Jim Amiot. A bye was needed in the third 33
