Lesnick doubles at Trail- Way ST By Len Breech HANOVER, PA, SEPT. 20 With the District Six and Seven points championship rapidly drawing to a close, Dave Lesnick closed the gap on Joe Heberling in the race for the top Amateur award by winning the 500cc class. Lesnick also took the 250cc win. Le nick took the 500cc class win on a very unusual piece of equipment; tlie 500 Moto-Morini V-twin. While the 250cc cla s has been noted for some wild, unpredictable races this season, Lesnick's win tonight has to rank as one of the most boring wins in this class this year. He LOok the lead from Ben Machamer at the end of the second lap'and pulled away to a straightaway margin, with Machamer having about the same margin over the Mike Klopp/George Fultz battle for third. Heberling took the lead as the field exited the second turn, with Lesnick on his tail. While they pulled several lengths ahead, a very heated battle developed over third between Johnny Bowers, Jerry Hash, Andy Derr and Dallas Baer. With Heberling negotiating the ruts in the lower part of the turns, Lesnick kept the Morini in the smoother middle portion, finally slipping into the lead as they took the two laps left sign. Bowers had taken control of third by then. Another battle is shaping up for the District Si number one plate between Rob Majeski and Dale Gingrich. At last check, Majeski was leading by a few points, but Gingrich closed the gap a little with a stirring win in the 500cc Expert final on his Zachman's Cycle Center Yamaha. Just when the Yamahas seemed to have it in thi Rotax-dominated cia ,Gingrich used the warm, very humid night air to his advantageas he put italmost against the rail on this very wide track, and pulled away to a half a straight margin. Majeski and Eric G.eorge battled over second most of the way, with George taking advantage of Majeski's lack of equipment. Seems brother Tom went to the Regional in Tennessee and took most of the tires and gearing with him. Gingrich had tried the high line earlier in the 250cc final, but itwdn't hook up as well as the heat. George made an early holeshot payoff as he had a few lengths over Gingrich, Georgie Price and Jim Haas. While George pulled away to a 10-yard margin, Gingrich and Price battled over second during the latter stages, with Gingrich up high and Price dodging the ruts down low. The veteran Gingrich held off the youngster by a few lengths. Another rider took two wins as Randv Texter took his usual wins in the "Randy Texter' Benefit" classes, better known as the 250cc and Open Pro c1as es. The Opens ran with the 750cc Experts and Rich Foard gra bbed the lead from Texter on the restart, with Joe Gately, Max George and Paul Crumling behind. By the start of the third lap, Texter had taken the lead on his way to a half lap victory, with Eric George moving into fourth over- • ~ J: u w w a: '" z W ...J .~ > '" 0 ~ 0 J:
