The Yamaha-sponsored event drew a a record number of entries and spectators to the DeAnza Cycle Park. The six-race co-sanctioned series, (SMX, NMA, CRC), features over $60,000 in prizes and conti ng-encies donated by Y"maha, Y"maha Team Center Dealers, Scou USA, Malcolm Smith, Silkolene, Dunlop, White Bros., PJI, mith Goggles, Bel-Ray, HPF, Pro Circuit and many more fine sponsors. In Open Pro racing, Fritz-Gibbon bauled with Honda rider Brian Davy for the lOp position with Fitz reachi'ng the checkers first in each round 10 collect the big share of the purse, as Davy placed second and Tony Spear rounded out the top three on a borrowed YZ490. The 250cc Pro race was a bi t tougher' as KTM ace Todd Campbell dominated the first malO ahead of an intense second-place battle between Fitz-Gibbon and two Suzuki riders, Luther French and Spear. Spear, French and Fitz-Gibbon renewed their first malO battle out front with Fitz-Gibbon getting the nod despite a desperate lastlap attempt by Spear. Fill-Gibbon earned the overall win with French's third-place finish outpointing Spear for second overall. Incredibly, Campben charged through the field 10 finish fifth in the mota and take fourth overall. Campbell's luck was no better in the 125cc Pro class, as his probable second mota win disappeared with a thrown chain. Jimmy Palmer used the opportunity to take the molO win but had to setLie for second overall, as Yamaha pilot SCOtt Brown outpointed ttIe Kawasaki rider for the overall.
