RenlZell got the holeshot, bu.l Tribou outbraked him going into the tight turn one at the start of the second lap. The Syracuse rider held onto his slender lead and took the checkered by a bike length. Rentzell wheeled out his FZ600 for the Middleweight Superbike race and, despite losing fifth gear, finished ahead of David Leppelmeir on his RSC/NorthRidge Yamaha RZ350. John Lowman won a hard fought ballie for third place but was 20 seconds down on the leaders at the flag. Rentzell and Tribou had a tremendous dice in the Heavyweight Superbike event. The race was literally run at record-breaking speeds with Rentzell smashing the lap record by over one second pUlling in a 1:21 :28 lap. The pace was too hot for Tribou and he decided LO sellie for second place after a few hair-raising slides. Rentzell revealed that he was riding with a broken right thumb courtesy of an endurance race spill the previous weekend. The pauern was repeated in the UnlimitedSuperbikeevent with RenlZell, a few hundreths of a second oH his previous record times, finishin'g ahead of Tribou. Downey doubles Prole MX debut By Mike Larson PROLE, lA, SEPT. 21 Steve Downey was a double winner today at Prole Raceway's first-ever motocross. Downey wheelied his KTM to wins in both motos of the Open class then ran away with convincing wins in each of the 250cc A division motos. Downey took the lead on lap two in the first Open class moto then steadily pulled away to nail down the win ahead of Yamaha-mounted Ray Waddell. In the second moto, Downey wasted no time forcing his way to the front of the pack, as he grabbed the lead in turn two and never looked back, ·stretching out comfortable margin that he held all the way LO the checkers. Waddel backed up his second-place finish in the first moLO with a third in the second moto to claim second overall. In the 250cc A class, Downey was again the dominating force. Downey had no trouble zapping the holes hot in moto one and powering his KTM to a huge lead that grew to over 30 seconds near the end of the moLO. With Downey way out front Husqvarna rider Doug Alexander and Honda pilot MaTk Bolten w.ere left to squabble over second place. Alexander held on to the runner-up spot until lap six when he slid out in a slippery corner and handed the position LO ·Bolten. Alexander recovered quickly and managed LO hold on to third. Bolten stuffed Downey in turn one of the second moto, but Bolten's lead a was short-lived, as Downey retaliated a few turns later and sLOle the lead. Downey was on the gas again in the second moto and had no trouble leading the race wire-to-wire for the vicLOry. Bolten neued second overall with another second place finish. Mark Herricksen controlled the first moLO in the 250cc B division, piloting his KTM to a commanding lead en route LO the victory. In the second moLO Herricksen had a ballie with Kawasaki rider Brian Sauerlee for the last half of the six-lap race. Satterlee was glued to Herricksen's rear fender and both riders bauled side-by-side at times on the white flag lap. Satterlee tried a last-chance banzai pass in the final corner, but ended up less than a bike length short of the leader at the line. Herricksen's perfea I-I score gave him the overall and Sauerlee earned second wiih 3-2 finishes. Results OPEN: 1. Steve Downey (KTM); 2. Ray Waddell (Yam); 3. Daryl Lilly (KTM). 250 A: 1. The event marked the halfway point in the six-race series. Honda/Fox/Oakley-backed Turpin set a blistering pace amund the 1.5 mile course for a pair of runaway wins in 125cc A action. Kawasaki of Rome's Mike Crane nailed down a distant second both times. Series leader Sean Dukes overcame mediocre starts to net a pair of third place finishes. Tennessee's Kenny Kizzar added another pair of mota wins to his perfect 250cc B series record, bu t in the 125cc B class, EP/Yamaha-backed Kizzar yielded to Freewheeling Honda's Todd Neal. The opening laps of the first 125cc B moLO saw eal lead the way with Kizzar latched LO his rear fendeT. Their dice ended on the third lap when Kizzar tangled with Neal and fell. Neal rode on to the win with a comfortable margin over Kiuar. At the start of moLO two, Neal claimed the holeshot again only to see Kizzar fly past on a straight during the first lap. Kizzar led until a fall gave the lead to Neal. Kizzar remounted and gave chase but had to settle for second. Kizzar and Neal are now tied for the series lead at 135 points each. Paul Cline hustled to the firstl25cc C moLO Jltoleshot and held the threatening duo of Brad Jimison and Marc Waddle at bay all the way to the checkered. In moto two, Cline was seventh at the start but moved up for a second place finish to earn top honors. Waddie started about 10th but eventually found his way past from runners Tommy Bilz and Cline LO finish first and take runnerup honors. Jimison started near the back of the pack and fought LO a sixth place finish to net third overall ahead of Bilz. Jimison leads the series by a slim three-point margin over Cline. In 250cc C action, Jimison stretched his poimlead via his 1:2, first overall performance. Second in series points, Waddle won the second moto but a 14th in moto one held him to sixth overall.
