Next in line came impressive Eddie Ingels from northern California.lngels won his first heat. but finished second to Bobby Schwartz after a spiriied battle in hi second ride. He then came back to win his final qualifying heat and was only one point behind Faria and Sandona. The first emi saw John Cook win a war from Keith Chrisco. Brad Oxley and chwartz. That put Cook in the main and he was qui kly joined by Mark Dwyer, who easily won from Mike Mazzacane in the second semi. Third spot went to Ingels who pressured Mazzacane on the last lap. Sandona had an easy Lime of it in the third semi. After a first bend jostle with Jeff Johnson that saw the 1985 AMA Rookie of the Year go down, Sandona opened up a commanding lead. Ronnie Correy then passed Tuff McBride LO earn second spot and a trip to the Consolation. The final semi was taken by Faria, who led all the way to win over Steve Lucero, Robe1'i Pfetzing and Andy Northrup. The Consolation was all' Chrisco, . who was making his first 1986 IMS appearance. He got the gate from the pole and led over Lucero, Mazzacane and Correy. Correy took on Mazzacane while trying Lucero. Getting a tremendous drive on the outside found Mazzacane in second on lap tWO. Correy then went on the attack of Lucero but couldn't get by the veteran. Finally on the last lap, after Chrisco had the win tucked away, Lucero and Correy went down bringing ouL the red and ending the race. Cook grabbed the gate from two aL the start of the main, bUL Sandona raced inside him for the lead on the back straight. Faira also gOL by Cook before the end of the first circuit. He then closed the gap and wheelied inside Sandona on lap two. andona hung Lough and held Faria back. Faria failed to be deterred: he had won all l40rhi starts in the Qualifyingserie coming into the main and he wasn't going to lose this one wiLhouta fight, but andona was there to fight. He constantly foughL back the advances of Faria in a thriJling war that carried on all the way to the checkered. In facL after the checkered they raced for another three-quarters of a lap much to the delight of the crowd. For the record the win and perfect score on the night went to Sandon·a. MX By Terry Cook PIGEON FORGE, TN, AUG 24 Suzuki ace 'Robbie Campbell took back-to-back mota win in the Open Amateur clas at today's Smoky Mountain MoLocross, and followed up with an overall win in the 250cc class. Campbell won the firsL moLo by a large margin over Kawasaki-mounted Steve Shin lever and KTM-mounted David Farri . Farri and Shin lever battled it out for second in the turns and berms, while Campbell sailed away. • In the second moto, Shin lever pulled a boleshot that left everyone else standing still. Farris and Campbell quickly caught up to the Kawasaki pilor, and kept the pressure on for the entire race. Campbell passed Farris over a tall jump and set his sights on a very fast Shinlever. It took Campbell the entire race, but he finally caught up with Shinlever. On the white £lag lap, over the whoops. Campbell took a go-for-broke line [Q the inside. forcing hinlever to the slower outside line. Campbell, with only a hort disLance to the finish line. beatouta stiff challenge by hilllever to ",in both mow, and lhe overall. Campbell followed up by Laking the overall in the 250cc diviSIOn. The Pro motos were won by Kawasaki-mounted Randy Atkins, and Honda-mounted Chris Brewer, but the overall went to Jim Chester, who finished a consistent 3-2 on his Kawasaki. Atkins, riding his first-ever Profesional moto, maintained a slim lead all the way to the finish over hardcharging Cary Burdette. Chester followed the duo home in third. Atkins came orr the starting line dead last in the second moto; Brewer took the lead and never let up. Atkins worked his way up to third, but then crashed outOr thecompetiLion.
