A thundershower just prior 10 the first set of molO left the well-prepared layout extremely slick in cenain sections, placing an extra imponance on judicious use of brakes and throttle. Warned of the hazardous conditions moments before the stan of he first Over 30 class, Mike Farmer grinned and said, "M ud never gi ves me any trouble. I go so fast that I just hydroplane on Lhestraightsandjump over everything else." It turned out to be a fairly accurate description of how he handled the track since he was especially adept at aviating over the first of the three sets of rocker-type whoops where mo t riders were encountering traction problems. A twO heat sweep by the original "Refrigerator. " Cousin Jerry had a somewhat more difficult time in scoring his two wins. "I was taking it real easy around one of the turns where I fell in practice and I kept overshooting another turn becauseofthemud. I was gritting my teeth, expecting the front end to slide out in several places and everything I did the rest of the pack would gain on me," a weary Farmer confessed after an evening's work that resulted in first overall in the 250cc Expen clash. Teammates Tommy Pavelka and Rusty Dorn finished second and third respectively with Doug Paley riding to a strong runner-up finish in molO one and then crashing heavily and getting run over by Pavelka in the second round, putting him out of the running and into the first aid area for a short stay. Toby Vasquez, a mainstay in the Mini Senior class, suffered his share of problems this-evening leaving a closely bunched field to argue over supremacy in the small bore contest. Tyler Larson finally managed to overcome the efforts of Jason Krempin, Jerry Gibson and Brad Lisenbe in gaining the win. The Mini Beginners found the mud a formidable obstacle as they went slip-sliding around the course in a host of unusual and erratic patterns which, while providing a great source of mirth for the spectators, did not appear funny at all to the participants. Chad Christian, Chris Janssen and a beleagured Chris Floyd managed to garner trophies after the muddy melee was over. . Austin~s irrepressible Smokey Joe, after a 14-week layoff with a broken leg, was so fatigued from his victory in the Vet class that he had 10 stay on his Yamaha YZ490 for a full five minutes after the final molO, unable even 10 lift his leg over the bike to dismount. Using a cane in the pits, he later attributed his triumphant return 10 racing 10 "clean living and DOClOr Claire Chanauh of Austin." Results MINI MINI: 1. Dustin Traylor (Kaw); 2.
