ROSA, CO, AUG. 16 & 17 turned in a two-day score of 19 points to best second-place finisher Paul Webster, who tallied a 27-point total. This year's Ute Cup could have been a mehmcho1y experience because a month before the event. no one had volunteered to set it up. The true heros of this year's event- Taco Kachenko, Ed Manniko, Terry Monteith and Larry Schmelzle - decided that the long-standing tradition of 16 years should continue unbroken. The first three sections on day one were butterfly chasers. After a brisk eight mile trail ride, competitors came toseetion fOUT, which wasoneoftwo water sections for the day. This section probably took the most points. Sections f9ur, five a nd ~ix ~ere fairly close, but after section six came a 30-minute blilZkrieR to section seven. This ride started smoothly on a jeep road but turned into a single track trail culminating in the "Prospector's Plunge." This old trail dates back to the 1800s when prospectors wound their way up Mount BigChief. The riders wound their wav down, about 900 feet in a half-mile' and the 83cc Mod.
