Wageman earns L.A County win By Terry Rezek PALMDALE, CA, AUG. 10 California Racing Club (CRC) began its IRC Tri-Race series today and Russ Wageman came away the big winner in the 500cc Pro class. Other winners included Jeff Stanford in the 125cc Pro class and Todd Campbell stopped Wageman from taking the double wilh his win in the 250cc Pro contest. The 500cc Pr- event was unpredictable 'at the start. All the close competitors were there; McLeod, Tim Hanna, Willy Simons, Wageman, Zitterkopf. Wageman got off nicely in mota one and was first through turn one. He maintained his lead through lap one and by this time Brad McLeod and Willy Simons were in a heated battle for second with McLeod holding the edge. On lap four, McLeod went down and Simons tangled with him. They were up quickly and recovered their positions within a lap; there was much maneuvering but no more changes in this molO. In moto two, Wageman holed again but Simons was right with him and the two went out on the course like a dance team. They remained only a few lengths apart for almost seven laps, but Simons was never able to find an opening. At the st.art of lap seven, he suddenly changed'the line he had been following for six laps and shot by the surprised Wageman. Simons went on to win the moto, but his first mota third was costly and he wound up with second place money. Wageman finished second in the moto and first overall. Hanna combined a four and a three for th ird. Stanford had a sU,Perb start in molO one of .the I25cc Pros and maintained the lead for three laps despite repeated challenges by Campbell. At the start of lap four, Campbell literally leaped 10 the lead over some very rough double jumps. Stanford was never more than a few lengths be'hind Campbell for the rest of the moto but could not get by and finished second. Stanford took the point again in molO two and this time did not let Campbell get the line he needed 10 pass. They fought for 10 laps within inches of each other and finished that close. Stanford's second and fustgave him first place. Wageman had a great start in molO one of the 250cc Pros. Simons closed quickly and those two battled for three laps, ignoring Campbell. That was a mistake and Campbell was suddenty nudging Simons. Simons went off the track briefly in lap five, giving second to Campbell. In that same lap, Campbell used those ro.ugb jumps 10 shobt past Wageman, taking the lead and the win. Moto two was an instant· replay of molO one with the same results. St..e Wem- seconds in the 250cc Pro class at Muddy Creek. Eddie Branch led the first moLO of the 125ec Pro class while Chester came to the front from last. Branch's bike broke on lap three and Chester cruised in for the win ahead of Brian Justice. In the second moto, Chester led from start to finish leaving Branch in the second slot. Brian Stanley dominated the 250cc Pro Class as he led both motos from start to finish and Chester moved to second at the finish in both motos. Ron Jones took both motos of the Open Pro class. Gerald Greene passed Jeff Eads in the first moto and was closing in on Jones when he had (;me of his spectacular crashes. dr?~pmg him back into fourth; Eads fmIshed second. Eads was running second behind Jones again in the second molO but on lap four Greene passed again. Greene ran second for two laps, but he had another crash over the doubles at the finish line. Eads cruised by and took second. Danny Eller put in -a super ride to win the first mota of the Senior class over Randy Wolfe. Ronald Haupt led the second molO for two laps before Wolfe moved by for the win and the overall. Haupt'finished second ahead of Steve Lady and Eller. ., Gary Keith put his Can-Am in front of Goose Darnell both motos to take the overall in the Enduro class. . John Jefferson and Kevin Addair battled in the Junior Mini class from start to finish. Both riders led the first moLO, but it was Jefferson at the flag. In. the second moto they tangled on the first lap wi th both riders going down. Jefferson got going first and went on to take the win and the overall. Jimmy Cornett passed Dwain Miller to win the first moto of the 125cc B class. Darren Wilson led the second moto from staTt to finish, but Cornett took second and the class win. Mike Bradshaw continued his domination of the Open Amateur class as he won over Rhett Smith. Mike Brown put his Honda in front of both motos 10 win the SeniOT Mini class. Cooter McClure swapped wins with Eddie Addair in the 250cc C class'. McClure won the second molO and the overall. Addair made up for it, however, by taking the 125cc C class win. Addair won the first moto and had the second almost won when Ray Boruff passed him in the last turn on the last lap 10 take the win, but his bad finish in the first molO dropped him back. Stephen Haupt won the first moLO of the 250cc B class over Jay. Hayes. Tim Jennings and David Lester led the second molO before Hayes charged
