Mazzacane upsets atSpdwyUSA By Scott Daloisio VICTORVILLE, CA, AUG. 2 Mike Mazzacane of Riverside, California, scored one of the upsets of the year Saturday night when he defeated "Flyin' Mike" Faria. Steve Lucero and Ronnie COrTey in the Scratch main event at Speedway USA. Another good crowd streamed into the facility and they were treated to some fantastic racing, but when the Scratch main event rolled off it was Mazzacane (Pan's Plus/Pig lron/ Hair By Bev/Car Tunes GM) who took control of the proceedings. Faria rocketed out of gate two and into the lead but it was Mazzacane finding the drive and racing around the pack as they came off the first bend for the lead. Mazzacane then shocked everyone as he imply rode off and left the competition behind. Faria moved away [rom Lucero and Correy in the second spot, but it was Mazzacane at the head of the pack scoring a convincing IO-Iength vicLOry over southern California's tOP two riders. Even though Faria could only garner second in the Scratch main he put on a spectacular show in the Handicap to win top honors. Young Billy Hamill, who has been making a name for himsel£ on the circuit. gOt on the First Division program as a reserve and off the zero he was the initial leader in the main event. Faria (Shoei/Carlisle Tires/STP /Cody Products/George Wenn Jawa) started on the 50 but by the time the first lap had ended he had pas ed Tony Briggs for third. He then weill to the au tside and dashed around Tuff McBride for second. Hamill. aboard a brand new Weslake, had a big lead. but Faria quickly chopped that down and he rode around Hamill for the lead on the back chute on lap three. From there southern California's leading rider took off and hid from the pack for the popular win. Hamill ended up second as he held 0[[ the fast closing McBride. Tom Burge (7-Up/Racetech/Mom & Dad Godden) of New York made hi first ever southern California appearance a successful one by winning the Division Two main event. Belllley Barrett LOok second with Ken Bidney third. In Third Division it was Mike Dalbey pacing the main over Tony Bienert and Scali Hodgson. Results SCRATCH: ,. Mike Mazzacana (GM); 2.
