Sumner WAUSAU, WI, JULY 6 Dave Durrelle, Bryan McDowell and Rick Gruber topped the Expert, Junior and Pro-Am classes at the annual Fourth of July weekend races at Marathon Park in Wausau. Rick Gruber grabbed the holeshot in the Pro-Am final and was never headed. Jim Summ;r came back from a mediocre start to close to wi thin two bikelengths of Gruber before his Stan Millard-tuned BSA went sour with two laps remaining. Gruber picked up an easy victory,. while Sumner coasted in second. Tim Pratt ~ook· third over Dave Camlin and Phil Jones. After the final, Pratt protested Jim Sumner, thinking that the BSA was not legal. "It's legal" repeatedJy said the bike's builder Stan Millard. "It's as legal as you can get'" After a lengthy teardown by referee Frnak Uliki, it was decided that the old BSA was, in fael, legal. Bryan McDowell doniinated the Junior final, leaving the remaining few Juniors in his wake. Bob Buffington and Mark Hilts, preparing for their confrontation in the State Championship, battled the entire race with Buffington coming out on top. Hilts took third over Gus Feind and A.J. Sumner. Dave Durrelle wasted no time in grabbing the holeshot in the Expen main and leaving the others to battle over second through last places. Many Bushman held off his Syverson Racig teammate Tom Colson for second. Randy Tripplet took fourth over Bill Hoffmeister and John Powell. Pratt won the Wisconsin State ProAm Championship in the absence of Jim Sumner. Mark Hilts won the Junior State Championship after a race-long battle with Buffington. (1 McLeod scores at LA CountyMX By Terry Rezek PALMDALE, CA, JULY 13 Brad McLeod was the class of the Pros today at LA County Raceway with his win in the combined 250cc and Open Pro race. McLeod got beaten in the first moto by Kenny Zahrt, but came back to win the second and the overall. The 250 and 500cc Pros raced and were scored together and 500 rider Tim Hanna got the moto one holeshot. McLeod swept by in turn one and 250-mounted Zahrt swooped past all of them to take the lead out of turn two. This was Zahrt's first race back with CRCafter his recent back injury and he didn't seem to have lost any spark, flying over the triples like a trapeze performer. McLeod kept Zahrt within shouting range and Gary Sailors came close enough to make McLeod nervous. They could not alter that pattern and finished in ·that order. Hanna did it again in moto two. Unfortunately for him, so did Zahrt and McLeod. McLeod was pushing Zahrt and, apparently, so was Zahrt's injury. Zahrt slowed abruptly at the start of lap two and let McLeod by. Zahrt tried several times after that to repressure McLeod, but couldn't regain his earlier momentum. He hung on for second and second money behind McLeod, eventually letting even two of the 125s get by. Greg Benton got the jump in both motos of the I25cc Beginner race, but Jason Yoshida slipped by in the middle of lap one to win the first moto. Benton was not about to let that happen in moto two and stayed ahead of Yoshida, who was having enough trouble with Jimmy Hanson. Benton got the overall with Yoshida second and Hanson third. Brock Suter may not have been the fastest off the line in the l25cc Novice races but he was first where it counts - at the finish line. Jeff Fine outpointed the rest of the class to earn second. Scott Murphy and Todd Anders played bump and run for most of moto one of the l25cc Intermediates with Murphy getting the last run to finish first and Anders getting the last bump to get fourth.
