The three riders held their positions through the entire moto. Bill Lower held four.th until Stan Courtap passed him on the final one half lap. Frankenberry, who took fourth overall at the AMA Loretta Lynn's regional competition a week ago, grabbed the lead to start the second moto. Smith and Bellinger again battled for second with Bellinger following Frankenberry through the checkered flag. Dave Sulecki rode his CR500 to the double-moto win in the Open B class. Sulecki took the holeshot followed by Dave Heppner and Jay Smith. Sulecki and Heppner battled the entire moto for first, but it was Sulecki taking the checkered seconds ahead of Heppner. Heppner grabbed the lead to start the second molO with Sulecki hot on his trail. Halfway through the fiISt lap, Heppner's bike staJled aHowing Sulecki, Dave Becker and Jay Smith 10 pass. Sulecki took the win, while Heppner had to settle for fourth and fourth overall. Bill Pizzino grabbed the holeshot 10 start the first moto of the 250cc B class and never looked back, leading the entire race. Rick Merhar and Marty Popovich battled for second with Popovich routing his Yamaha around Merhar halfway through the race. In the second molO, Merhar, Pizzino and Popovich were 1-2-3 through the first turn. Pizzino crashed out of contention, leaving Merhar and Popovich to battle for first and the overall win. Merhar held the lead through the second lap when Popovich grabbed the lOp spot and the overall win. Merhar's 3-2 finishes gave him second with Darren Lindh's 4-4 finishes earning him third. Ryan wins it all at Baylands MJC By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, JULY 9 Armed with three well-tuned KX Kawasaki motocross machines and a heavy load of confidence, Rick "Fly-N" Ryan took all three Pro classes and put together a perfect six moto victory ride in the process. Although management keeps changing the track so that no one rider can get it dialed-in, it doesn't seem to slow R ran down a single bit. ' He appears to try for a good stan only every other time on the grid, probably just to keep in practice. Those times he ends up midpack or worse at the first corner are a treat for the spectators and entrants who key on his lines, hair-trigger accelerations out of corners and high-aerial attacks. The closest to Ryan in the three separate molOS run was Jeff Pestana aboard a quick YZ Yamaha out of Salinas. Pestana put his in front of Ryan's San Jose based 125cc in the second moto of that class. It took Ryan three laps to get around Pestana, who did manage 10 put IOgether a pair of thirds for second overall. Jon Nelson fell in the first moto so his 5-2 evening robbed him of second overall. Nelson has demonstrated that he and his equipment are up to the task of beating Ryan on this course. It may only be a matter of time before Nelson and Pestana, respectively, get the best of the King of the Bay Ryan. A heavy entry in the 250cc Junior class saw a Banzai charge into the first corner by 21 ea~er aspirants. The holeshot was won 10 both motos by Don Toffton a Honda, but he got no respect from anyone for the feat. Pushing him for the entire distance was Paul Turpin on a borrowed KX from Ryan, but the ].S.E. Racingsponsored Turpin was only able to keep the pressure up in their first moto. ToUt's successes at Baylands have him slated for advancement into the Junior ranks; he'll need only a win or two more before graduation. Another vastly improved ridel this season is Jeff Rapetti. In the first moto of the 250cc Junior class Rapetti made no mistakes other than getting into heavy first turn traffic; he used good lines and judgement to take a third. In the second molO it was Tofft into and out of the first corner first, but this time Rapeui got a better start an was relatively clear of the normal jam-up. However, the successful finishers in the first moto hadn't counted on the fired-up Greg Fox. Fox began a not-~-be denied move to the front at the third corner on the first
